I have just installed a new cast iron fireplace and mantle. I’ve also built a raised trim around the old stone hearth and plan to tile inside.

Can I tile directly onto the stone or do I need something in between the adhesive and the flat stone base?

Thanks for any help.

I should mention this is just a show fireplace and will never actually be used for a fire.

It’s a stone slab which is flush with the old wooden floorboards that was the original hearth. Honestly not sure what type of stone it is.

The finish is smooth and flat. No texture which is more what worries me as no key for the adhesive to really grab to.

It’s more than likely a slate slab hearth, nasty crack tho ,think l would use a anti-crack mat first before you tile, use flexible adhesive.
