baton out or cut in?

what do you guys do,baton out or cut in the first row of tiles and tile up?

i dont really have a preference,but if i use a baton i find i get started a lot quicker and see progress quicker than drawing a datum around the first row then cutting in every tile.So what do you do?

i baton as i find it easier to mark and cut in bottom row afterwards

usually baton out,but if it's not going to be a full day then i'll start with the floor,get it level and ring it from a datum with my cut,if you mark the datum round the room you only need to do the cuts for 1 wall at a time rather than all of them at the end when you remove the batons

mostly baton,altho on one job we had a 600mm deep trav border to cut by hand(random) going round the room so we cut the 1st row in and then went of a batonabove border height if that makes any sense...the border was so thick it ran throo the entire middle wall.

90% of the time the floor is to be done so bat up and scribe the bottom row in after floor.

if walls only scribe in bottom row and work up

I prefer to tile the floor first then cut the bottom row in on one wall then go up from there and complete each wall as i go if this is possible.
I set lazer level to where the top of the tile on the bottom row is going to be then i place tile against floor and wall with back edge off tile facing me then mark 2mm below lazer line then cut them this leaves a 2mm expansion joint between wall and floor!
I hate cutting in bottom row afterwards all in one go i find it tedious, but this is only my view, if the situation doesent allow for this then batton off for me..

My prefference is to batton out my datum.

In a splash back I normally batton my datum a tile + grout width above worktop and just measure at points across the wall to ensure enough space for full tile at bottom.

never used the KD ones but have the rubi ones,

you either love them or hate them.

I find with the karl ones is that I don't use the screw at the back to hold it up.

The arm which holds the baton up just drops a fraction and will support itself, so easier to adjust.

Every tiler I know does it differently.

My own way is to put my level line round at about 1m high and tile down from my line to the floor. Do this 99% of the time unless the tile is overly heavy or the walls are very bad.

I have used both batons and tiling up from the floor and don't really have a preference.

Recently, I have been marking the datum and tiling down from the datum. This is now my preferred method. If large format, I usually use Ardex X77 which will hold anything, no worries, but otherwise Ardex X7G+ or Mapei Keraflex work fine for hanging tiles.

I do in wetrooms wingn but in a standard bathroom tend to finish the walls then the floor but always seal between the wall and floor

never done it like that before...at the same time as im tiling the floor,might give that a go.

i tend to do walls then floor...just my way of working.

prefer to start from the floor get my level right round the room then ur off your knees after that then its just a case of finishing a wall as u go and no going back to anything my prefrence anyway

just cut in the first row as im going might think it takes a bit longer but then you dont have to go back to it so really saving time in the long run imo anyway

thats the way i have been doing it for the past year or so.I find its a good method if the soil pipe is in the wall and not on the floor as trying to put battens up is a no no because of the soil pipe.
