Went to look at a job the other day i have mentioned it in another thread, someone i know wanted there bathroom tiled in 300by 600 porcalain tiles i advised him that the tiles are to heavy as his walls are brick with skim.I told him maybe he should think about a smaller tile but that was the ones he wanted and dident want to take them back.I also advised him he would have have to dot and dab walls and secure with fixings so it could take weight.yhe thing is he has a freind who is a joiner and freind who is a plumber, they said i was talking absolute rubbish and told him not to deal with me they advised him to pva the painted walls and tile straight on to it,could any of you pro tilers out there explain the risks of doing this as i am going to e mail the threads to him any input would be much areciated.

Big tiles.....painted walls then PVA........mmmmm = accident waiting to happen.

p.v.a?
painted walls?

what substrate do you think you are tiling onto?
because if you think a layer of p.v.a can hold 600x 300mm porcelain tiles then i think 99.5% of people on here will disagree

Cass, there are hundreds of threads on here that highlight your point, if you do a search then just enter the threads, copy and paste the links in to an email and send away mate:thumbsup:

apart from the fact that white star isn't even around anymore ( I believe it's now BAL Grip) these tiles are too big...not trying to be shirty with you mate, but that's not brilliant advice..Pva & paint is a recipe for wearing those tiles at some point when you're in the bath!...it's not all about slapping them up and having it off..there's some really decent tilers on this forum..it might sound pedantic to you...others might just say professional.

If I was marching with an army of 100 men, and 99 of them were in step would it be me out of step?😳

totally agree mate but you can still get white star(grip is the water resistant allegadly non-slip stuff that spreads a bit like porridge)

PVA is a no no for starters, acrylic primer is the boy! Do the job and leave some complimentary hard hats so they can wear them in the shower!

can you?..haven't used it for years and was told last time I asked for it that it was now grip..to be honest I rarely use tubbed nowadays!..thanks for the heads up tho!

Our members like to follow Bs 5385 standards...

Have you seen or heard of these..? if so why would you use PVA or a dispersion adhesive on tiles of that size..?

This might help you>> P.v.a. Versus Primers...... and we do not condone you advising members to use anything that isn't suitable.

Obviously you have joined for a reason be it to try and gain work or whatever , but a quick read of these will show you how we go on >> Forum Rules

i sometimes use white star on splashbacks if i've got the floor to do and won't be grouting till the next day

crikey..last time I remember using it was on a persimmons site in 2003(!?!) where it had been specified for the boxings in all the bathrooms!...all I remember about it was it was a pain to wash off in the summer!

I had a look at your pics deno, if that was my bath with all the rubble in the bottom, I'd be more than a tad annoyed, where was your bathboard/protector?
