diamond pattern with border

Hi guys, this is related to my other thread re the bathroom with freestanding bath, but I thought it needed a thread of its own.

The customer wants black and white tiles (300x300) in diamond pattern for the bathroom floor. The pattern itself isn't a problem, I've done that before; however, she would also like a black border around the outside.

I'm scratching my head to think of a pleasing way to achieve this given that a) it's highly unlikely that the perimeter would finish on a diagonal half-tile cut all the way around, and b) even if it did, I'd really need a border tile matching the diagonal dimension of the 300x300 tiles in order to get grout lines to join up.

Anybody have any suggestions of how to integrate a border into a diamond pattern...... and make it look nice!!?

personally i would suggest to the customer to use black grout🙂devil🙂 in the border,with it being a different colour from the rest of the tiling it will look more like a border and that way you won't have to worry about the frout lines matching up,either that you will have to tile the central diamond style area and make the border to suit(whatever size you have left after centring the initial area),which will be tricky if the room isn't very square

check http://www.tilersforums.com/members/dave.html album on page 12 there is a very good example on a diamond style floor with a border,it's not the 2 colours but will give you a good idea how to go about what your customer wants!

That's a fine piece of work David. Based on that kind of pattern, I'm wondering about a black inner border (the rectangles) and a white outer border (sized to fill in whatever space is left). I'll have to get back into the room to see how/whether it would work.

A few questions though John, and forgive me if I sound ignorant, but this would be my first attempt at a 'fancy' border! I'm guessing you cut all the border pieces from the same tiles you used for the main field. Is that right? And this gives you the flexibility you need in terms of the setting out: i.e. the width of the black rectangles, the dimensions of the border diamonds etc - correct?

Are those standard ceramic tiles?

A no frills decent looking border would be just a tile layed square around the perimeter of the room with diagonal chessboard in the centre or you could cut up some 20mm strips of black and white and run them around the perimeter too .

Newplumb - Its a range called JAZZ from CTD. 200x200mm black and white. Yes all tiles cut from this size, but the border looks good at about 50mm squares.
This job was in a 'House' built in 1900 for a NE shipbuiding magnate and recently converted into 3 apartments - all retaining the period style, they did however go for underfloor heating to bring it somewhat into the 21st century!
