A customer asked me recently, 'how many m2 do you think you have fitted since you started tiling?' I tried to work it out and came to the conclusion that it was somewhere in the region of about 5000 m2 ( roughly 1000 per year on average since tiling full time). So, any ideas how many m2 you've done? Ball park figures welcome!

not tiling, screeding, but somewhere in the region of 1million m2 for me this year

About 20 bathrooms @ approx 26m2 each, about 15 kitchens @ approx 10m2 each, studies, halls & external approx 150m2 all in, mind I don't tile full time so about - 820m2 in 2 year...bloody hell!

I lost count about 1970, but if I had a pound for every M2 I had fixed, I would be a multi millionaire.:drool5:

an average site tiler does 60m2 a week so I guess between 2500-2750m2 a year would be a resaonable estimate, times that by number of years tiling and you wont be far away

Count up your m2 then average multiply by your average rate, then look at your bank statement and........ Cry.
I'm not calculating mine, lol.

do you not have sore knees after all that alan?

I dont get on my knees anymore 🙂 All Gyvlon so pumped screed. To be fair I dont lay it very much these days I just persuade everyone else to do so......

i gathered that alan,it's a case of you get paid for what you know, not what you do

I've got a end of year statement for the last twenty years that has the exact m2 for each year and I've installed well over 50'000 square metres. The one thing I have noticed looking over them is how I've made much more money for installing far less square metres of tiles as I've got older and wiser!

This year I've done 28 bathrooms at about 30sqm on average, two kitchens an entrance hall and a utility, so about 900sqm, but I'm a bathroom fitter rather than a tiler. The first bathroom of the year is pretty big, floor area is about 12sqm and the ceiling is at 3.8m

I just realised how little I get per m2. I am now going to cry gently..........

Get your prices put up Ajax123...NY resolution....Like my old dad used to say - A man who works for nowt will always be busy..

JB, im always busy but i defo dont work for nowt,

I should charge more for our workmanship but we just wouldnt get it round here.

Not a gripe mate its just reality where i live n work.

I know its difficult to get the balance right, and justifying a higher price can be difficult. Being able to deliver your promises to a customer is paramount if your prices are higher than your competitors. When we first started this recession we had a lot of trouble pricing because so many tradesmen were coming off sites who only tiled 2 sides of a bath and a splashback. Cheap prices, poor materials, no dust sheets down etc. When we asked customers if the other tilers could give references, a lot of them had never even worked in a private residence! I have a feeling they have been 'found out' now.

The majority of my work is "On site" but i know for a fact that i will leave a far better job than any other so called tilers in my area.

I dont advertise, i work through word of mouth & i havent been stuck for work for over 7 years.

I work on the ethos that i leave a job that i am happy to leave in my own house & i am not happy until my client is!!

I understand that there are "Tilers" coming off site to do shoddy work, you get what you pay for.

I have seen them come & go & i keep will too!!

Robson, when I started working for myself my wife said to me 'Just imagine me looking over your shoulder on every job' and believe me she is a perfectionist. It's stood me in good stead.

Very wise words, I like it! If I had my wife looking over my shoulder every day my work area would have to be immaculately clean, the words 'dirt' and 'untidy' are not in her vocabulary!

I dont need my mrs to look over my shoulder.

I have OCD, my mrs is not a patch on me, im the best i can be.

About 150000m of that approx 10000m of that laid in sand and cement all in thirty years on every type of job.
