Hand Made ceramic tiles.

Hi guys,Anyone got any experience fixing 10 by 10 hand made ceramics?

Reason i'm asking is I fixed some in a splashback a few weeks back and now the customer is saying tiles are not flat and different shapes.

It is my understanding that hand made tiles are designed to be individual so creating an oldy world look,which sets them apart from the run of the mill tiles that everyone has.

Anyone got any feedback on these?

If the tiles are masde that way there is nothing you can do about it. Why has it taken so long for them to say this? Is it the tiles or the fixing they are complaining about ?

To be fair the customers have had some personal problems that you don't want to know about,which meant i couldn't show them the tiles before fixing which probably wasn't neccassary as they had supplied them.

I think they look nice TBH,just don't think the customer realised how they would look when finnished and probably suprised by the effect of different thickeness tiles.

Same kind of uneven effect you get with tumbled trav or slate.

Couple of mm here and there i'd say,Think they show up more when extractor light is on,tends to show up the uneveness more.

not a lot of diff this is only a sugestion next time increase your notch trowl size and use a small level to try and get as flat as pos it takes time but its worth it and if pos turn on extractor lights down lights if pos while laying ie helps hope this helps:8:

I have fitted hand made tiles by Marlborough. They vary in size quite a lot even when they have the same batch codes. That's an inherent trait with these types of tiles, you can even see fingerprints on the reverse side. Spacing can be a real problem because they can be 96mm at the bottom and 101mm at the top, thats the whole point of these exclusive items. When the job was finished my customer loved them.
I think your customer has to live with their choice of tile.

I agree with Dom, without seeing pics though it would not be fair to say if it was a fixing error or just the way tiles are. Handmade tiles will always very in thickness and size so what are you supposed to do. If they wanted flat tiles why didnt they buy flat ones ?

Cheers guys The customer chose the tiles and maybe by only seeing them in a brochure and not in situ,Diamond tiler was right some of the tiles do differ in size top to bottom also.

Ain't got any piccys to show,but there is no question of poor fixing i'm convinced they didn't expect the outcome with these particular tiles and can't see the point of re-doing with same tiles as would get same result surely.

Hand made tiles are not fitted that often, I do have pictures but they are on an old phone, I will try and load them up. Why don't you ring Marlborough and talk to their tech people, they have to be the nicest people you could want to speak to. They will tell you what should be expected.
Just a footnote, did you seal the tiles before fixing? most hand made tiles are ceramic and have a cracked glaze finish, sometimes you can hear the glaze cracking even when they are still in the box. The first time I heard it I thought I was doing something wrong, one phone call and they assured me it was normal. Some hand made tiles need wetting on the back before fitting, and then sealing again when dry.

I've fitted these too. The customer has already bought them and wanted the 'rustic look' which they got as the tiles differed in dimension and thickness. Not my cup of tea but the customer liked them.

Can't imagine hand made tiles would be anything but variable in depth and shape. Can't see how you would realistically be able to do much about that. Even some machine made tiles vary......

i havent fixed those tiles but i have fixed hand made tiles from fired earth

they were all different thicnesses

i got worried when i started fixing and stopped and showed her

she liked the effect it was what she wanted

it looked good when it was finished

very rustic

if the client chose the tiles from a showroom they should have had some idea of how they would look
