Guys been to measure a job today.

Kitchen floor 3/4 of it is concrete with olf quarry tiles down and the other 1/4 is t+g flooring, well laid and solid.

However the wood is about 2mm higher than the tiled floor

The tiles are Granite black with shiny bits in, they are £90 a Sq Mt and need to lay 6 mt2 in all.

Plus a small 3m2 splashbak.

My question is re the floor.

Im thinking of laying cement backer boards over the whole floor.

Do I need to put a movement joint where the 2 floor surfaces meet in the boards.

Or do I board all over with no movement joint and put one into the tiles where the 2 surfaces meet under the boards?

Or do I do both

Im reckoning around £300 for the floor alone?

Any advice gratefully received

I have just done a similar job but with ceramics not granite. I overboarded the whole lot with Hardiebacker 6mm. Was ok on the wood part but a real pain on the concrete! I ended up having to drill and plug into the concrete to get the boards flat..... not fun at all!
The polished granite will need to have a flat floor, you may be as well to have a movement joint where the substrates meet, but you may well have to board out the wood bit anyway. Prehaps skim the whole lot then with leveller to bring the heights back together, leaving your movement joint of course. you would need to carry the joint through to the tiles as well.

As grumps say's...you will deffo need some sort of movement joint where the two substrates meet and continue this through to the tiled surface....use either a pre-formed joint or just use a Silicon joint...........

Double check it is Granite!!! I have been out to three jobs recently where the clients thought they had granite and it was Basalt or similar.

Make sure whatever you do prior to fixing the Granite that the floor is bang on level.

Granite is totally unforgiving when you are fixing and if you are fixing it with a grout joint less than BS 3mm make sure the Grout is Flexible and unsanded. Oh and check the T & G and the quarries are totally secure beforehand.

Cheers guys, jusr what I thought and advised the customer really. Thinking of using a Silicon joint the same colour as the grout (black in this case)

Have seen similar tiles at another shop (where I get a deal on discount in return for addy) so Im trying to get them to go there. I know the ones in this shop are granite.

This is one job where there is no way Im buying the tiles for them. Im not shelling nearly £600 out before I start on it so its up to them where they get the tiles from . If they buy from mine then they get a discount . If they dont then they pay full price.

Whats the best addy for thisjob. 2 Part flexi?? Anything else I need to know for it?
