I've been asked about the possibility of using glass tiles for a kitchen splashback. My concern is the edges; as in how to deal with corners and finish the edges neatly around windows and reveals.

Any advise/help appreciated.

cheers,

Stephen

Thanks. I should have said I don't think a trim is going to be acceptable although the easiest.

Since I wrote my question, some other threads popped up on similar subjects and I saw Bri showed some of his work. It involved cutting the tiles and reversing them I think. There was a mention of polishing the edges.

So I have more questions. What is the best method of cutting glass and what do you polish the edges with?

cheers,

Stephen

It depends how far u want to go when it comes to the edges.
They can be mitred successfully but the blade quality has to be first class and costs a bob or two!
All these external edges are mitred.

When it comes to polishing u can use Sait Silica Carbide Pads, but u must be
Careful, if u polish too much at once the glass will get hot and the tile
Will start shelling and the edge disintegrates.
So u have to do it carefully using high grit papers that are wet and dry, and u need variable speed polisher capable of low speeds.

Don't take this the wrong way and I am not or never am being patronising but mate that glass work is seriously skilled and at the price per square m of the tiles there's no margin for error!! There's nothing wrong with a square edge trims imho, I built and tiled this a couple of years ago and would still insist on trims as I ain't got the knowledge or tackle to deal with glass another way.. I look at it this way...you can't go 'practicing' on a paying customers job

Adhesives need to be carefully selected as well..

@3_fall , that is seriously amazing. I don't think I'll be doing that. That quality of work is why I hang around here. You know that the advice is going to be coming from people that know what they're doing.

I should also have said when I was asked about glass tiles, it was by my wife. With all due respect, neither one of us likes trims. Commercially, I would go for trims. For my own place, polished flat edges looks possible or maybe a combo like @Bri did with the edge tiles being reversed.

Thanks to all who contributed,

Stephen

I can't even remember what I used to polish the edges, I think it might have been some 1200 or 2000 grit wet and dry paper.

Yeah I found if I started with 320# by the time I was at a 1000# it was crystal clear glass.
I wanted to do it on those mitres, just cos I could! Haha (self indulgence)
But the client preffered the edge left by the cutting blade, they looked grey in colour.
