Hi Everyone,
I'm after a bit of advise regarding my bathroom which I'm re doing.
Several questions, I'm afraid!
1. When i took the old tiles off the floor, they pulled off a bit of the surface of the backer board in places, upto a few mm. This is well fixed down, so don't want to remove if possible. Can I just use something like self levelling over the top to prepare for new tiles?
2. I've re plasterboarded most of the area, is it ok to tile straight onto this or will it need priming? Tiles are large 600 x 600.
3. One small wall I'm hoping to leave, this is skimmed painted plasterboard, what prep.would i need to do to make it good for tiling?
4. Best adhesive to use?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Benny

Hi Benny,,

you will be ok to level over the backer boards if they are secured (sounds like they are)

you are using a large format tile on your walls which will need to be powder adhesive either rapid setting or standard set (depends on how long you wish to wait to grout)
Plasterboard will need to be primed as best practise when using powder

the painted wall will need to be prepped.. you could apply a thin layer of adhesive, let it cure then scrape off which will bring the paint off or you could scribe it with a blade..
Other wise you are simply applying adhesive to the paint and not the actual substrate

I can throw some brands of adhesive to you if you like which would make the job easier

I would use Bal Flex-One as this has extended open time and adjustment time but you can grout after 6 hours

a tilers primer will be ok, or sbr but this is more expensive as it can be used for different things such as making slurry mix etc

just don’t use PVA
