External steps

Hi, guys i've got some external steps to do, never done steps of anykind their concrete and pretty level and I was just after a bit of advice wether I should tile the risers first or the treads ( I thought the treads then riser is just like bottom cut on wall and would shed water better and make joint look nicer), thoughts much appreciated.

The tread should overlap the riser to stop water penetration so riser first.

the tread always overlaps the riser,but i always like to do the tread first as i find it easier and i have tiled LOADS of steps.I find it easier to get the tiles in alignment,but whatever works for you then go for it m8.

Whatever way you want to do it but the tread must overlap the riser and RE or REX tiles are usually used to form this edge but depends on the selected tile. I generally do the bottom riser first and place level along top edge starting on the bottom step.

Ime not with you their DS normaly you lay the tread first and the riser sits on top of it never seen any or done any different marble etc.

The riser does sit on top of the tread but the tread must overlap the riser below which if you start at the bottom is laid first.

f.a.o...DS why dont you start at the top?Could be a bit of a pain trying to start from bottom and working upwards.TBH...i have never heard of anyone doing it that way ,but as i always say if it works for you then so be it.

That way i can ensure the overlap of the tread over the riser is exact and then i place the next riser on top of the tread with expansion gap. The main thing which i hope we all agree on is that the tread should ovelap the riser and that as lucius said the riser goes on top of the tread with a spacers gap.

i think you are out of line with that comment m8,we are all here to help each other.If you dont have anything constructive to say,then dont say anything at all.This forum has been going for 3 years and we dont take kindly to that sort of comment.

If he had read my post he would have seen the word generally. It's often a 3 bed semi steps i'm doing not Buchanan Galleries so i don't have any problem reaching. I do it that way so the tread front edge is always perfect on the overlap of the riser which is in place. There may be better ways i didn't say there weren't. I was only trying to give the guy some ideas. If someone would like to explain how they get the front edge of a rex tile bang on without the riser in place i am happy to listen or when using tiles bigger than the steps. As for the comments though, no need for that, in fact bang out of order. That's my rant over :hurray:

Cheers for all the helpfull replies, and they are typical domestic steps ( 4 in this case ). I chose to start from the top as I felt a bit easier to get my grout lines good ( first paid job so v nervous ) and I have just taken a bit of extra time with the risers, unfortunatley this weather has put the scuppers on job so it's not done yet, but thanks again guys for helping out. :8::8::8:.
