Edging trim - TilersForums.com

Is there a practical reason for using edge trim? Myself I cant see the point to it, and I think it looks better not to have it and overlap the tiles and grout the gap as normal.

Is this just personal preference?

That depends on the finish on the edge of the tile??? What happens if you had a white tile with brown backing, the edges being brown not glazed ?

Not always an option where there will be a cut at each external corner. Theres always the option of mitring the two cut edges.

Prefer the look of a high quality trim myself.

Sometimes it wont be your choice if a customer wants trim its their prerogative, or a wifes :lol:

think it looks good without trim on the likes of a natural stone or travertine tile, any other tile i would say trim everytime. i would only do it if the tile was the same colour and glazed on the exposed side, i wouldnt do it if it compromised the setting out of the job just so you have a full tile on the corners.

i used the brushed stainless effect trim in my kitchen , worth the extra money over plastic any day of the week

I prefer working without the trims as well. Most of the time I reverse the cut to have the neater edge on show only if its edge matches the tile. I have even gone as far for some of my clients who hate trims and painted the edge of the trims to match.

Again it depends on the situation but there is more skill in creating a perfect non trimmed edge to a trimmed edge. Each to there own.:8:

I worked for a firm that coulndt make their minds up which they wanted. They told me to butt joint then once Id tiled all round the window they madfe me rip it off and mitre it... gradfe 5 porcelain too, I was gutted!!! :mad2:

Depends on the tile, if it has a different colour glaze to the bisque you have to cover it somehow (IMO), if not just because it will look rough but also that edge will not be waterproof. I think the real problem is bad tilers that think that trim is just to cover things up, trim can make a bathroom look amazing but only if it is done well. Like anything I suppose.
