Quick question, Tiled an outside step today risers and treds but the sides were in poor shape so plan was to use 6mm backer board beded in SPF on sides of step then tile as normal finishing with a brass trim over the edges of the side tiles as customer asked.

Is this a fair plan or is there beter suggestions?

Cheers folks

I thought I had replied, don't know what happened there...

I think your'll find hardie is not suitible for external use, I would use render.

Aquapanel Exterior Cement Board

you will no dount have to order it so maybe quiker rendering it as mark suggests

Boyo at topps said yeah no probs its fine outside...what's that all about! Only want to build out approx 6mm so either need board that's 6mm thick or build out with render but ive never done that before. How do you go about it? Or being 6mm should I just prime and brick and use keraflex or keraquick to build out?

hi davie, you can buy a dry mix render and mix it yourself,it will need to dry however before tiling

what adhesive are you using cant you get an addy that will deep bed and make the 6mm up

hardie backer dont recommend using it outside but I spoke to no more ply technical who told me that if you prime both sides of their board with sbr you can use it outside, give them a call to double check as this was last year when I spoke to them

Kilty I'm using keraflex which can be used up to 15mm deep bed. Only worry was couple of bricks where that powder way but think is I prime the damaged brick work then use keraflex it should be ok....in my head but u might be trying to convince myself.

What you think?

ahh ok,best to f lush them off with sbr and then render i would say if they are that way

bal do a quickset render thats ok for outide use,2 hour seting time i think

ctd sell it davie so do topps

Ah really, sounds good will have a look in topps tomorrow. It's only a couple of bricks that are like that the rest is concrete. Would it be an idea just to render the damaged bricks then bed tile using thick bed add like kera flex or render the look only ask as other side is ok so prob best just to use add to build out 6mm?

Plan putting 2 45x45 to fill sides
