Adhesive not bonded to tile help!

I have a problem with a

600 x 600 Porcelain Tile (BQ)

on

Rapid Setting Flex Grey Adhesive (Excelbond) - TCH

with Underfloor heating - TOPPS

on PVA Primed 9mm Ply (screwed every 150mm)

on Rapid Set Flex Grey Adhesive (Excelbond)) with PVA

on a 25mm chipboard floor.


why have the tiles come loose (lifted) 8 months after being fitted ????????? I think it must be the adhesive ?????????

PVA is a big no no,
There's a lot of layers there, which part has failed, ie: is the adhesive still stuck to the floor, or the tile?

hi newbie,how thick/wet /dry was the adhesive mix you used

did you back butter the tiles i assume not

are all the tiles lifting?
the one saving grace if they are lifting intact is you can re use them
is the adhesive well stuck to the substrate?

the adhesive is not budging from the subtrate and there is a good print of the back of the tile, just a thought but excelbond flex adh are suitable for porcelain aren't they ? just got an element of doubt ???

tiles lifting mainly around toilet but its completely dry, I do think they will pull up easily enough though

there are cracks where the UFH is ? but this is pretty normal aint it ? they are slight and customer didnt put UFH on for 2 months (she says)

I think the lack of back buttering is the issue here or maybe the adhesive was a bit dry?

was the chipboard tongue and groove and was it screwed down to the joists ?,the ply wood you have over laid its very thin tbh the spider web cracking normally means one of 2 things excessive bounce in the floor or the under floor heating was turned up too quickly the tiles will come off perfectly clean if either has occured

Did u damp sponge the back of the tiles before you laid them, tiles can gather a lot of dust and if youre adhesive was too dry maybe that could be a factor why .

i would say adhesive does the bag say suitable for porcelain porcel bond

Could be white 'Alum dust' aluminium oxide on the backs of the percelain. I had a batch of porcelain with this dust on the back recently.

Hate to say it but the prep work is wrong and not back buttering is looking for trouble could be any number of reasons for the problem

before using the tiles again i would soak them overnight then drip dry to get suction back in to them. Tiling directly on chipboard for me is a No! it just sooks all the moisture out the adhesive unless you use an addy like bal flex or the mapei 2 part stuff

soory newbie my mistake was on my phone earlier viewing and replying, as would already imo it seems a number of contibuting factors has led to the failure of the floor

You got the substrate wrong in the first place, you have a 20 mtr room which had 9mm ply fixed over chipboard. Did you check in case the floor needed more strength, ie extra noggins? You used Pva and your unsure about the adhesive and porcelain?

Too many fundamental mistakes that as a tiler you should know, are you having to put this job right for your customer?

All been said above, 9mm ply, pva, no back skim, a tile will always debond clean (especially porcelain), from poor substrate. Sorry.
