BRICK HAMMER...has one flat traditional face and a short or long chisel-shaped blade. It can thus be used to chip off edges or small pieces of stone without using a separate chisel. The chisel blade can also be used to rapidly cut bricks or cinder blocks This type of hammer is also used by geologists when collecting rock samples.

Traditionally a brick trowel is made of carbon steel, until 2002 when the cast stainless steel brick trowel was introduced. The advantages of the stainless steel are that it has longer wear and is rust-free.

Re: A to Z of hand tools

CROWBAR, also called a pry bar or prybar, or more informally known as a 'jemmy' or 'jemmy bar' is a [DLMURL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tool"]tool[/DLMURL] consisting of a metal bar with a single curved end and flattened points, often with a small fissure on the curved end for removing nails. It is used as a lever to either force apart two objects or to remove nails. Crowbars are commonly used to open nailed wooden boxes. Another common use for larger crowbars is general demolition: for removing nails, prying apart boards, and generally smashing things. It has also been used as a weapon in hold ups.............dave..

chopsaw.jpg

CHOP SAW.... essentially a lightweight circular saw mounted on a spring-loaded pivoting arm, and supported by a metal base. Chop saws are considered the best saw to get very exact, square cuts. Compound miter saws have been developed due to the limited cutting capacity of the chop saw. These are basically chop saws that can make bevel cuts as well as miter cuts.......dave..

Re: A to Z of hand tools

CROSSCUT SAW..is a saw that is specially designed for making crosscuts. A crosscut is a cut made horizontally through the trunk of a standing [DLMURL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree"]tree[/DLMURL], but the term also applies to cutting free timber.
Crosscut saws have teeth that are designed to cut wood at a right angle to the direction of the wood grain. The cutting edge of each tooth is angled back and has a beveled edge.

COMPOUND MITRE SAW...Used by joiners, for mitres....a more advanced saw than the chop saw.
CONCRETE MIXER/CEMENT MIXER...A concrete mixer (also commonly called a cement mixer) is a device that homogeneously combines [DLMURL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cement"]cement[/DLMURL], aggregate such as sand or gravel, and water to form concrete. A typical concrete mixer uses a revolving drum to mix the components. For smaller volume works portable concrete mixers are often used so that the concrete can be made at the construction site, giving the workers ample time to use the concrete before it hardens. An alternative to a machine is mixing concrete or cement by hand. This is usually done in a wheelbarrow; however, several companies have recently begun to sell modified tarps for this purpose.
