Although not recommended to tile onto plywood, it sounds like a combination of the plywood and ceramic tiles drawing out moisture from the https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ too quick. Was the plywood primed first? And what type of https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ was used?

Guessing it was a standard set https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/? If the floor was solid and the plywood primed and really well screwed down. A cement based https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ should stick to it pretty good. I usually wipe the back of ceramic tiles with a damp sponge just before I back butter and bed them. Maybe the https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ needed longer to set?
