Re: Who is Paul sh

Hi, gonna ask this question here, but will put future questions in the relavant sections, Ok, this one is causing a little confusion for me, I'm going to tile my bath room floor (ceramic tiles) i'm going to lift toilet and sink while i'm at it and lay 12mm exterior ply, now, i know i must use a cement based flexi adhesive, but, do i use a 2 part flexi or is that only if i was laying porcelain tiles. Cheers.

You answered your own question, cement based adhesives are 2 part adhesives 🙂

Re: Who is Paul sh

Yes use a 2 part flexi m8.

E'erm no -
1 part flexi is more than good enough for tiling onto plywood. Use flexi grout also.
Check with adhesive manufacturer for suitability. Most good 1 part flexis are also suitable for porcelain.

Re: Who is Paul sh

No you would use 2 part adhesive, flexi if you like but normal rapid set would be fine for ceramic onto concrete

No need for 2 part !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 part is an adhesive with powder and a seperate flexi additive - a 1 part flexi is good enough - in fact more than good enough for ceramic onto 12mm plywood.

I was typing my message as you were typing yours, wasn't starting a fight with you

Re: Who is Paul sh

The following is what i thought was right, please correct if wrong

Concrete Floors, Use a cement based adhesive(Rapid Set) for ceramic tiles, no need for flexi, Only use a flexi on concrete floors when laying porcelain.

Correct, but you would use flexi on anything other than ceramic, not just porcelain.

Re: Who is Paul sh

Ok, one more question, when laying any tile on a concrete floor do i need to prime the floor, if so what with.🙂

Re: Who is Paul sh

I think you could get away with PVA but i would always use an acrylic primer, all pva does is seal in the dust where as the primer acts as a bonding agent between the concrete and tile adhesive. Stick to acrylic primer.

I agree 🙂

Treat Anhydrite screeds differently- first laitance ( top flaky layer ) must be removed. Use a special primer ( usually )

Re: Who is Paul sh

I always use single part Bal Rapid set flexi on ply floors and plain rapidset on concrete floors. Flexi grout or widejoint + admix.
Can u 2 stop the girly hairpulling and nipple pinching now. 🙂

Re: Who is Paul sh

2 part adhesive is when you want the 'shlt to a blanket' type adhesive.

1 part flexi is good enough for plied floors. 🙂

Me too, single part flexi on ply, i hate using 2 part, real mess to clean off tools:sad_smile:

Nasty - a bugger to get off your hands also -not always practical to wear gloves.
Great on chipboard though 🙂

Yes - at times, have never had any comeback.
Use flexi adhesive and latex additive instead of water .
Just to clarify this I do not mean standard 2 part flexi - most of which need the 2nd part additive to make it flexible.
I mean a 1 part flexi to which you usually add water. Instead of water I use a latex additive - in theory double the flexibility - also nearly double the cost.

that ultimate flex is good gear just add water its like chewing gum i always use rapid set because you can grout sooner would only use slow set on an unocupied house on a large floor

Every need for 2 part adhesive onto 12mm ply!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!every adhesive manufacture will only recommend single part(mixed with water)if onto a minimum of 15mm!!!!!!we dont have 15 mm ply in uk only 18mm.if you use 2 part (bag and bottle)then no need for any boards at all!!!!! however single part is ok onto minimum 10mm cement based backer board.OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just thought i'd use more !! than u

gaz u must remember the days when you stuck down tiles on timber/ ply with normal rapid!! we know better now ,but ive got to tell you we had next to no comebacks!! dont do it now obviously but makes u think how we got away with it!!!

Well yes, mon Kapitan the days of chicken wire down first are long gone.I started professionally 22 yrs ago,and all the flexi adhesives were not available, but the polymer to make it was.I never laid onto wood or chipboard without a minimum of 9mm wbp ply,if you jumped up and down in the kitchen and all plates in cupboards rattled, then 12mm.As a retailer I do have a responsibility to quote manufacturers spec and british standard,I wouldn't always conform to these myself given my experience. But and mark my words everyone, when it goes **** up as it may do one day,and you havent done what it says on the tin don't blame the retailer or the manufacturer co's we won't want to know!!

well said gazza mate, like u say we know wot works and wot doesnt, but all u newbies stick to regs until you know wot is wot....and wot isnt..... lol lol.....

Well said DH.......

Personally i use super glue 3 for chipboard and double sided sticky tape for concrete.

I have nothing but comebacks...but then again i do enjoy a good fistycuffs and i am also desperately trying to get on rogue tradders!!
