hi everyone, only started tiling a couple of years ago. i went to college first of all and then was lucky enough to meet someone at the gym who was a tiler. learned most of what i know from him and dont think i'd have reached this point without his teatching. out on my own now and have to say lovin the fact every job throws up something different. was a bit nervous to start with, got a few jobs under my belt now so not so bad. so far i'v had a lot of good feedback for the work i'v done. hit my first real problem on a bathroom i finished last week, after tiling the walls desided to tile the bulkhead at the back of toilet and sink, the surface seemed fine and no obvious movement i also pva before tiling. the tiles are now being forced up by something and dont know why. anyone any ideas? :mad2:

Hello and welcome....

PVA hey!!..mmm

what was the substrate behind the toilet/bulkhead area..?

Hi there, think your gonna find out a lot about PVA here and the how too's and how not too's!

I'll sit back and let the others explain....

the substrate was wood, not sure of thickness though. seemed firm enough to tile onto. why no pva?

A tile has lifted which may mean expansion below the surface, if you see what I mean😳

looks like the adheasive is reacting to something, when i first tiled it the tiles where flat and the mitres on the trim where spot on. now you can see the tiles have lifted and the trim has moved. its got worse with each passing day. looks like a like of paint instead, would like to know what the couse is though.

Sounds like the wood substrate has absorbed the moisture from ,pva, adhesive & grout & is now starting to deflect, either that or it's drying out with reversed effect. Anyhow all timber based materials react to some extent, to moisture or heat on one face, lessened by thickness & composition.( Sorry didn't mean to sound egg sucking)
