Do I Need To Use A Showertray?????

Afternoon all.

My friend needs a walk in shower installing and I'm the appointed DIYer. Just after some advice. I understand the principles of over boarding the timber floor, tanking floors and walls etc, but wondering if I need to use a pre-formed shower tray?

My theory was to overboard the existing timber floor, creating a fall using the over boarding, then tile straight on to this after tanking. Waste cut into the over boarding. Is this an option?, as everywhere seems to want to sell you a pre-formed tray and a waste to go with it. If this is do able, what's the best waste for the job?

Thanks in advance :grinning:

These are the million dollar questions. Have seen a diagram using firring pieces to slope the no more ply boards. But a seal round the drain? Am stumped

I would go with a low level shower tray, providing of course the waste can be accommodated.
That way, should minimise the risk of leaks etc. Jmo

Cheers lads. So it is possible without tray, but using one is the safe bet. That answers my queries as I've read allsorts. Any particular brand you pro's recommend?

@ANDY F - Schluter do some cracking products, I think its the Shower T system you need?
Otherwise, most major brands make shower "trays" (otherwise called Wetroom Formers, Shower base, blah blah) that you install then tank over the top of, check out Ebay for bargains!
(Marmox, Impey etc)

No worries @ANDY F , also, check out You Tube once you settle on a brand, most of the decent companies do some fairly excellent "how to" videos. Just try not to be distracted by the multitude of Fail vids that seem to drag me in every time I go on there!!!

I've some great pictures of "wet trays" made from hardibacker and firring pieces.
Failed after a few months. Water damage everywhere!
Don't risk it. Buy a proper tray - with a proper drain assembly.
