DISASTER - Hit a water pipe & gas pipe with nails

Phoned that bloke up and told him that he is gonna have to lay the plywood down then ill tile, i let him f**k up instead of me.

As from now if any preping with walls, ie tiles need coming off or if floors need to have plywood down im gonna tell the customer to get it done themselfs. ive had enough of multitrading when im no good at it.

Ill stick to the tiling

public liabilty is required if you are to run a business now mate. you can trade for 3 months before you have to inform the inland revenue. i pay 120 pound for 2 million pounds worth of cover with zurich insurance and that covers plastering, tiling and general building work....

its tax deductable and its a fraction of the cost of what might happen in a disaster or worse still some shister customer pretending to fall over your tools and claim for injuries etc etc.

look for a reputable company to insure you and check the small print. sometimes cheap isn always good if you know what i mean???

ps your story cheered me up there mate.....i used to know a plumber and we christened him , 'THE GROCER' because he had more leaks (leeks) than a fruit and veg shop...to make things worse his surname was carpenter. you'd have thought god was trying to tell him something lol

Plying flooring isn't all that hard, and you can make money by doing it.
Telling a customer to get it done before you do any work could end up costing you in lost jobs to other tilers etc if the customer dosent want to try and do it themselves.
As for removing tiles, there will be a lot of people who won't want to do that either, and may end up phoning round more tilers to get someone who'll remove them too.
I don't know of any tiler that won't remove them, easy money, and if your worried about damaging anything with falling tiles, invest in a new bed quilt and use your old one to cover baths, toilets, sinks and floors., then theres no chance of damaging anything and you won't lose out on jobs either.

ive just started tiling so im going to register after xmas with inland.... Cant wait to get stated..

As for insurance im gonna sort that out soon.

As for now im not gonna attept anything apart fromt tiling untill i do get insurance

If you can mate use 12mm ply and 25mm screws most floor boards are 18mm so it give you 5mm to play with so to speak. It’s like this mate take your time and think what you are doing and you will do spot on if you think about it you can do anything

12mm plywood is to think for a small bathroom, there will be a lip with the tile aswell

If it is a small lip mate go to B&Q or some other floor place and get a trim the one I have just got is 9mm minimum on one side and 21mm max on the other of it but there is different sizes

12mm ply is the norm Tysfoot m8 with 25mm screws and this way you will NOT go through any pipes in future.

Has anyone else found that those detectors are a waste of time?
I've had 3 different ones so far and all 3 have let me down.
Metalised plasterboard fools them completely and anything other than a Barratt house i.e something made from bricks or stone fools them also.

I'd pay good money for one that actually works!

Any recommendations?
