Hello tilers !!!

Started a new job today for a freind of a freind, they wanted 2 sm of floor putting down in a bathroom but they needed plywood down, so they said can i do it, they bought the tacks and the plywood and then didsaster struck, didnt realise i hit a gas pipe and a water pipe with the tacks and it wasnt decovered for half an hour.

Had to rip the tiles up and they had tp call a plumber, luckily enough the plumber was a friend also and didnt charge.

the cost could have ran into thousands if the customer didnt see the leak through the ceiling downstairs - my heart sank, didnt know what to say or do

Im just starting up my tiling and im going to register as self employed afetr xmas and i have no liablity insurance..... Waht a day !!!!

Shall i use No Nails and hardboard to secure a level floor over the old flooorboards as i wont ever use nails again , What do you think ?????

firstly..it happens...lol lol...

You should not use nails to secure your sub-floor down .. you should use screws..these should be no more than the thickness of your sub-floor and the substrate you are fixing too...this then prevents what happened today...
just as well they were friends as this could have cost you a packet with no liability cover........never mind its all part of the learning curve and as you make these mistakes you wont do them again..bit like the floor grout eh!!!!

yeah, bad week so far.... the boards are very thin i i wont even trust myself to use screws on the same floor.... Can i get way with using no nails. what type of borad is best

Exterior ply or backer boards.....as long as the screws are not longer than the two surfaces then you wont hit owt...........you need screws to pull it down tight and reduce movement..wouldn't recommend no-nails etc....

ill have a look round b&q tomoorow, would have rather used no nals on this job but if you really think nails is the answer, its persuading the customer now, wil no glue work at all. In future am going to tile and only tile, why is it customers seem to think were all plumbers eletricians & joiners

Screw the board down..............making sure they DON't go right through the original floor.

As already mentioned.................DO NOT USE NAILS.

I always going for over kill........I glue and screw ply down.........I know I don't need to..........but hey ho

Small bathroom With floor boards laid flexible addy with extra sbr on to the floor and then laid 6mm hardy backer on top and then used galvanised nails or screws to support if the floor is slightly uneven backer boards tend to level it out.

its such a nightmare, its only 2sm, ive got to tile round the sink and the toilet, its turnied into a free job and ive got to go out and get the ply AND SCEWS.

The rate your going..........Your'll owe them..........think you do already

Also, look at a floor to see if it has been lifted before any cuts across the boards, screws fitted where nails used to be, new fittings/radiators/towel rails.
The tell tale sign are there for you to read. I once lifted a section of floor and found the client had cut grooves in the underside of the floorboards to allow for radiator pipes, had I screwed into it even 10mm would have pierced a pipe.

I got public liability with Zurich for £90 - 2 million cover and allows any other work (except gas & electric) "associated" with the main job of tiling - so basic plumbing / joinery etc.
Don't feel so bad  - on my second paid job I drilled right into a mains cable - OUCH!!!

We all have bad days mate - Saturday was mine wasn't happy with 2 tiles laid the day before so decided to remove them and put more adhesive behind to pack them out level as the walls were all over the place. The tiles pulled the plasterboard off behind and I was left with a hole 600 x 450 and bare breeze blocks not what you want at 4 oclock on a friday afternoon.

Ended up cutting out replacing plasterboard (plumb and flat this time) and re-tiling the next day so just to say it happens to us all.

shouldn't use tacks or nails putting ply down on a wooden floor always use screws else there's a probability of the ply coming away from the floor. Mike:thumbsup:

Just a reminder... screws,

That was probably one of the very few things that we were taught correctly on our course, to screw down ply and not nail.
We did actually nail ours down on the course for time saving, but it was stressed screwing had to de done and no glue of any kind or nailing would last.

There's me thinking I have had a bad day today.................."I Kicked my coffee over........a whole cup, never got a sip out of it"..........was I pee-ed off

bad day

had the same thing mate so dont panic as happens to the best of us

knocked my coffee over on a cream carpet, stood on her bloody dogs tail pissed myself there likes, took tiles off only for half the wall to come down, not impressed, told her wall was ******** and would need skimmed she wasnt impressed lol as pissed myself there 2

as they say mate **** happens and we live and learn from it, now i just ply with screws, dont remove tiles, and let them get someone else in if not happy lol

andy

:stupid:

Dan could cost him a lot more than that  mind you we have all done some mad things in our life :grouphug:
