Architrave cutting using the Fein Multimaster

Here you go Mr Tiler,

Get the height for the cut by running a level off the tiles already fixed. I find I piece of cardboard works well to replicate the adhesive thickness

Then cut out (leave tiles in place while cutting as a guide for the blade)

Mark the tile and cut it

Then fit the tile

I think it was tile measurements, lol! Tile + spacer was 597mm, so those 2 numbers are 4 and 5 tiles :lol: The amount of times I've written a phone number on an off cut, or the floor and then lost it or tiled over it is ridiculous :lol:

The only thing that could really go wrong is cutting too much out, that's why you should always fit the adjacent tile before cutting, to give you the correct height.

Also, make sure you have a good fein blade. Needed to make 4 cuts in oak. No chuffing blade. So I improvised, and cut a new set of teeth onto an old blade. Did the job fine.

Gotta watch out though for hidden cables, especially alarm cables before you go Fein crazy!

They really don't last very long, I need to dig up some old threads to find which replacement blades are best, or maybe we could just discuss it here!

Nice one Bri, not actually a difficult cut, more an awkward I would say. Did it slide under ok when addy was down?

Yeah went in dead easy, only had to slide it a little bit. Just goes to show how easy the Fein makes a cut like this, without it I'm not sure it's would be possible to do so neatly.

Make sure you use an off cut of tile to lean fein on. Can be a sod for metallic marks.

I always turn tile upside down so any marks go on back of tile

I've always used an off cut, even when I did it the stone age way with a hand saw :lol: I'm quite surprised how quickly the blades wear out, one started smoking today, thought the smoke alarm was going to go off!

Depends on how flat/bumpy the back is?

i just use off cuts.

I use the Bosch PMF180 for smaller architraves and other things, although for the example in the first photos I would use my grinder followed by some sharp wood chisels. It would take about 10-20 mins to do that with the Bosch, maybe the fein is quicker???

I have used both but, haven't used them both enough to tell exactly how good one is compared to the other. I'd say the blades will be important, all I can say definitively is, the Fein is awesome, nice smooth action and feels very solid.

I have the Bosch GOP250CE and if it took me 5 mins to cut and knockout I'd want to know why!!!

A Ryoba is a Japanese hand saw with 2 cutting edges and lasts for years - fine tooth for a neat cut and cuts on the pull.
Cheaper than fein.

IMO yes... most deffo.

Have seen the main unit quite cheap at 130 but the blades nearly double that ! Are the Saxon blades on eBay ok to buy instead so use the fein unit but just use the Saxon blades?

To prolong the life of the blades I move the fein back and forth across the cut so the blade stays cooler. The blades last twice as long now I'm not just plunging it straight in.
