Bumped into another tiler i know in the takeaway tonight, i had just finished work and he asked if i worked Saturday's and Sunday's, i said yes if I'm busy to get through the work, then he said people like me make it harder for tilers with no work by doing this...He said if i didn't do so much there would be enough to go round :joker: I said if you were any good you would be busy like me i drank my beer :8: and got my order and walked out laughing

If people request your services, then you must be doing a good job, good luck to anyone that can get more work if you have to work weekends too,to me thats what its all about,i,m sure he would not be complaining if it were the other way round,i think this is a lesson for all of us,be the best at what you do,and your reputation is sure to follow..

Exactly, spot on there.

Good on you enduro

It's a dog eat dog world & you have to grab the work while you can. How about just working weekends & have the rest of the week off lol :8:

I wouldn't consider working ones arse off as "stealing jobs". It's part of the game. If I knew of a tiler in my area who was dumping the prices though, I'd kick him square in the nuts. Oh wait, I DO know of a tiler, nah wait, make that two tilers, who're dumping prices!

*fetches the pliars, the hot glue gun, and the baseball bat*

You should have offered him some work and when he jumped at it just tell him that your van could do with a good clean! ha ha

I was up at half six on sat morning, done my farm work and was on site for 8am. Worked till half 10 that evening. Home, did the farm work, out to pub and i will be grouting at 8am in the morning.

If the work is there and you could be arsed then do it. If not then moan at the people who are!

This job is no different than any other, you will only get out of it what you are prepared to put in, sitting at home waiting for the phone ( Gaz has a mental image of skeleton in armchair next to pnone ), just won't do it. Do as Fekin and others do, drop leaflets, speak to firms....if you see tiles falling of a shop front step, offer to replace them, folks can only complain about not having work, if they have actively gone out of their way to create it !....Gaz

I completely agree with the comments above.
As a total newbie tiler but fairly experienced in business development, it is all down to your busienss and work ethic. If you are prepared to get off you rear and promote yourself and your services, and then put your money where your mouth is and do a quality job you will always be busy.

I have made sure that I have done a spot on quality job every time and now I already receive requests from people that I have been recommended to. People will always pay for quality so not only am I busy, I am able to charge a good price for my work.

Example: I was asked to quote for an en-suite and I quoted a market price for my area. I won the job by not being the cheapest but convincing the customer that I would do the best job. The customer is so pleased with what I did for them that I have been asked to do their main bathroom and they have stated that they would rather pay more for me to do it than get a cheap tiler in.

Cheap, poor quality tilers are always going to moan that a quality tiler is taking their business.
I'm busy and making money, I hope you guys are too!

My old dad allway's said that no one is going to knock on your door asking if you want a job, you have to get off your backside and go knocking and let people know your there.

The guy probably stopped someone else on the way home, picture the scene....
a good lookin bloke with a stunning looking bird on his arm....

"If it wasn't for people like you...us ugly gits would stand a better chance and there;d be more good lookin women to go around...."

bit extreme but you can see what i mean:ninja:

Maybe if he was prepared to work on Saturdays and Sundays like you, he may take a bit of work off you. Doubtful though as you are building a good rep, he needs to get his rear in gear and start to build one too........if his quality is good enough!

Grumpy

On the other hand I have met many customers who seem to have the importance for a cheap job as a priority over asking more questions or proof of my own tiling quality.

Actually I'd say through my own experiance that 90% seem to be more interested in the job being a basic low cost one rather than blowing a large amount on expensive tiles and having the importance of quality stressed to me.

There again, it probably reflects the areas I have targetted through advertising, so currently I am trying to upgrade my customers to the next level now, bigger more expensive homes, and hopefully I'll start to get some higher class wetrooms to get my teeth into.

Hence the saying you only get what you pay for!!,why fork out on expensive tiles just to have some cheap useless tradesman come along and make a right pigs ear of it,then having someone else come along and having to do the job properly, costing you even more money!!

You the public have been warned!!

My friend "Squeeky" is a gardner (Real name John) and he refuses to work weekends or after 7pm.

"Richard you have to have a life as well as working..." he tells me.

On the other hand when we all go on group holidays guess who is the one who doesnt have the money and either cant come or if he does then cant afford the meals.

Priorities. Life is not all about weekend work and 24/7 but if the jobs come up then go for it. In our group most of us actually enjoy our work so dont mind the hours.

Thats me first left (and next to me is Squeeky). He "Doesnt do" weekends but everyone else on this table does.. And that includes my wife Phil (oposite right).

I think the bill for the Pizza is about as far away from him as possible!

I'm not knocking him or others but my point is that because of his beliefs then he has to miss out on quite a few social events due to a lack of cold hard cash.

Advice? Stay out of chip shops and stick to curry houses or pizza places.... (Nah then again maybe not).

weekend? after 6 years in the security industry working days, nights, bank holidays, Christmas days, 7 day weeks etc, I don't think in terms of monday/friday/weekend/bank holiday - everyday is just a workday

Quite right BigDaz, i used to offshore on the rigs where we also worked 24/7/365. Only time the rig ever stopped was so we could sit down once for Christmas Dinner and that was only 30 mins.

You do need a break and family time but it doesnt have to be at the usual times!
