Didn't know where to put this, off topic didn't seem fitting either, but here goes.

Did you feel nervous on your first real world job, i feel like i would need months of practise before i was let loose on someone elses property, with me i think it may be a confidence thing, but you can only do so many friends and family before you have to bite the bullet.
I just ain't the type of person who can do a job, stand back, look at it, and say to myself, that will do, that will do isn't good enough in my book it must be done right.
I feel very aprehensive when i think of the day that i will be on my own to combat a hole host of problems, were you like this or am i just a sissy.

Yes...
My first job was for a Solicitor, was worried about him taking legal procedings against me if job was not right - 3 years on and still waiting :icon9:

I defy anyone to say they didn't feel nervous on their 1st....2nd......3rd.....4th..... gettin the picture Paul?

Your'e going into someones home and 'selling' your skill for their hard earned,

You'll be fine mate, learn your stuff...be respectful....be happy🙂

I was nervous on the first job i did for a customer, it's only natural. You'll have your doubts but once your there and you start prepping and setting out you'll just forget all that and just get on with it, takes a good few jobs to get the confidence up. The best advice i can give you is try and make your forst job a nice simple one, eg a nice little kitchen splashback where minimum prep work required, or a small floor. You'll feel the confidence flowing you when your finished and your doubts will fade. Take it step by step and don't bite off more than you can chew. Good luck m8

I've been tiling for about 5 weeks and had about 5 qoutes, did'nt get the first 2 but got the third. I was very nervous and took longer than expected doing the job which was a kitchen floor about 15 sq mts. Customer said the floor was nice and flat and on doing the qoute it seemed to be flat, but when I started to tile it was'nt, it was higher in places and lower in other places. I was'nt entirely happy with the finished job due to a few tiles lipping, but the customer came home from work and was absolutely overwhelmed by it, and could'nt stop saying what a good job I had done, which was a great confidence booster, but I'm in the middle of my second job now, a block of 3 toilets at a garden centre and then the owners double garage floor an a wet room within the garage, and I'm still as nervous as hell, but I'm sure the nerves will dissapear once you get up and running.

Hi Paul SH

Welcome to the fourm

It is very unstandable that you are going to feel very nervous, all of our students have felt nervous when they first started. Over time you will gain confidence, please do not let nerves put you off.

My first job was 95 metres of slate in a manor house for a builder, with uncalibrated slate, flying by the seat of my pants on that one, took my time and it was fine, that was two years ago still working for the builder, jUST REMEMBER if your not sure about something ask, to late when you have cocked up.

To the trained eye, you see everything. But to Mr Smith who knows nothing much of value about tiling, he doesn't notice the fine tuning that is needed.

Just make sure you put it right for next time and don't think you can get away with it all the time like some people I know do.... 🙂

What concept is trying to say here is that his tiling is terrible and he ain't sure how he has so many refferals so you should be fine with a bit of lipping......

He He just kidding Anthony 😛

My first job was a splash back, a kitchen floor and a conservatory floor. Thought i would have it done in a week but 3 weeks latter i was still there. It happens to all of us mate but as time goes by you will get faster and faster. My advise to you would be 'don't be in a rush to get really fast' just let it happen, take your time on EVERY job and learn loads.

When i started i was always getting advice of concept (cheers bud) .........now we are like to passing ships lol (much to his relief lol)

You will improve your all round game mate. Use us lot on here and don't be thinking it's cheeky to PM someone a question if your answer is urgent thats why we are all on here so mail away mate.

I was nervous as hell on my first job and couldn't think straight when I was looking at the room. Had to step back, open my flask, and settle myself down, but once you get started you're fine. Been tiling for 3 years now and although I still get the odd flutter it does get easier with time.
The other thing to remember is that you tend to be far more critical of your work than most customers will be......they just look at the finished effect rather than examining it close up as you do.

I tiled for over 20 years man and boy.The last job I did was 50mtrs porcelain with underfloor heating,5 sizes of tile in a pattern, and an island unit the size of Lancashire to tile around and meet back up.I did the job, lived every cable ,every tile, every cut and considered and worried about everything that could go wrong.I got it all done without a hitch,AND THEN WOKE UP!!!sweating like a whoare.Went to work and did the job. All that experience and still in the back of your mind you think this could be the one that goes wrong. It is the fear of cocking up that drives you to get it right, take your time and enjoy what your creating, the regular lads on here will set you straight if you get stuck:wink_smile:

always take your time and look at your set out and do the job as if itwere for yourself ,if your not sure about anything just ask, great advice available on this forum and its free. always take pride in your work . Still get nervous ,but never had as mutch job satisfaction in my life. enjoy your work

always take it step by step time spent on the layout ill always save you time on the job
i still always lay the tiles out dry to check the cuts and i dont get any nasty surprises
hope ive helped:coffee: no sugar thx
