Radio hoaxers

As you are all aware, a hoax played by 2 Australian DJs has allegedly lead to the death by suicide of the nurse that took the call and gave info .

Now at the time the hoax was announced it was a prank, a joke and humour. A few days later the sad death of the nurse involved, now it has been confirmed she was found hanging. It has also been said that 2 notes have been found...what is in those notes has not been disclosed.

Its all so very tragic for all concerned but.....and I dont wish to come across as uncaring , but do you think its going too far to be talking about banning such calls. I am sure if this call had been about anyone other than the royal family it wouldn't have made such news.

I am sure there was no malice in the DJs hoax, they seem to being getting crucified for all of this. Can you imagine if they do stop these sort of pranks ? Can you imagine what it could lead to ?
The facts are that these pranks have been used for years , there are many radio shows all around the world and TV shows that are all about pranks. Where will this go if they clamp down on it ?

I think there is a lot more to this death than we know as yet, and to quote a phrase from the Samaritans
The chief executive of Samaritans, Catherine Johnstone, says: "Suicide is complex.
"Although a catalyst may appear to be obvious, suicide is never the result of a single factor or event and is likely to have several inter-related causes.
"Sometimes people get to a point where they feel they can't cope, where it all gets too much to handle.
"It's worse if people feel they are alone and they can't talk to anyone about what's weighing on them."

Anyway reading back my own words, I dont think I have actually said what I wanted to say ...or in the way I would have liked it read but I hope you can all see what I am getting at.

Any comments ?

i have to agree.
as sad as it is about the nurse i dont think all the blame should be leveled at the djs.
i do think some of these pranks go to far

Nurse Jucintha Sadanha has turned up safe and well. In a phone call to the Australian Dj.s concerned she said. Beat that for a ****in wind up, you ****s !!!

I totally agree Sir.
My mate posted on Facebook that he hoped the dj's had a terrible xmas, and there was heap of people who replied wanting to crucify them.
Worlds gone mad, it was a totally innocent hoax call that meant no harm at all, and now the world wants to lynch them.
I completely understand how awful suicide is as i know four people who have taken that choice and i've seen the results of their actions.
These DJ's will have this over their heads for ever, and will never forget this.
The World really needs to get away from it's XFactor, blinkered, blame everyone else attitude.

Seriously though, I think it's blown way out of context. As sad as it is, all the blame should not be on the dj's. They'll have to live with this for the rest of their life's thinking they were fully to blame for her death. The notes found could be about anything. I wouldn't be surprised if she had her own problems in her life. Taking her own life over a prank call is a bit extreme

I'd say the type of call they made, to a hospital in another country, when nurses are already too busy due to workload, wasn't cool.

Radio 1 did one a few weeks ago to a girls kiss and tell magazine claiming they had an awful story to see if they'd take the bait. That type of call was wasting less time for important people and to be frank, they should do more types of that call to the likes of tabloids and whatnot just to show what tat they will publish just based on a call from a anonymous person.

But to call a hospital and try to gain access to anybody's information is wrong, especially a royal.

I don't think they should have death threats, and I don't think they should lose their job or show. The producers of the show though need to learn a bit of tact. There's a line you can cross and there's penty you can do this side of the line. But there's no need to jump over it for a laugh.

My wife is a nurse and says the girl was stupid to put the call through, the dj's shouldn't be held responsible in anyway shape or form. If you hear the call it sounds so dodgy, just like what it is. A wind up, I agree with sir, it is what it could potentially lead to if they start banning these things.

In my humble view, the nurse clearly had underlying mental issues. People just don't commit suicide over something as 'petty' as putting a phone call through to someone.

The fact that these two very bad impersonators have been vilified and hauled over the rocks is tragic. It was all approved by a legal team as far as I am aware prior to this call taking place.

I know it's a tragedy and all that but sorry, I can't help feeling little sympathy for somebody that takes their own life who has two children - can life ever be that bad?

My view is that if do a phone hoax you don't know who your really talking to but must take responsibility for your actions.

Whether she had problems or not or may have committed suicide at some other time due to isssues in her life, the hoax call may have forced the situation.

ok, we all get on the hoaxers back about this, what if they top themself...are we to blame! world has gone mad!!!

I agree with all of the above, it's gone too far. Suicide rarely occurs from 1 single incident, they are just crucifying the DJ's now.

What I most take issue with is the statement from the hospital management about how they were fully supporting her throughout this difficult period. Having spent 18 years as a nurse I view that statement with great suspicion.
If I ever made a clinical error and a manager came up to me and said 'Don't worry, we'll support you fully through this difficult period'' I'd have assumed at least one of us must be on the hallucigenics!

It's a wonder Max Clifford wasn't poking his nose in there...on second thoughts maybe not.

Everybody always says 'lessons have been learnt'. Utter rubbish, they all talk a good game to make themselves look good as if they're the good guys. Just doesn't wash with me I'm afraid!!!

i dont think the djs should be taking the rap for this,it was merely a prank and the nurse shouldnt have put the call through

my thoughts are what pressure was the nurse under from her employers on this not only will she have been dragged over the coals for breaking confidentiality but its also a royal ,was her job under threat from this?

Well lads it's good to see that we can see this issue as it should, with some thought ,and some realism.
After the post my mate put on facebook and the mass witchhunt it provoked i thought all the world had gone totally mad, but it looks like us tilers have some common sense.
A pat on the back all round.

Pretty much my thoughts too and.....although not knowing the full facts.....why was she found at nursing accomodation and not at home with family....was she living there ? marriage issues etc ? Were the hospital being supportive? I cant see that myself . there is more to this !

it's a real sad case, the dj's can't take the rap. Perhaps more stringent phone screening etc should have been in place, but who knows maybe she was already on the edge anyway. Candid Camera were doing stunts like this for years and I don't think anyone saw it as anymore than a joke.

And Jeremy Beadle - remember the woman who thought aliens were in her back garden and she asked them if they wanted a cup of tea? Or the bloke who's van they swapped over and ran it into the Thames. He was going ape. These were just well executed pranks, and they went on national tv afterwards to be interviewed by Beadle on the show. Didn't hear of anyone on that show committing suicide. Like I said earlier and most of the comments, the nurse must have been troubled by a lot of things!

I tend to agree with that....

I don't think the des should take the "blame". Tis was apparently just an ill thought out badly timed but innocent prank. What I do think though, based on the events of others doing similr earlier this year and the same last year that programmers and dust should learn from their mistakes. It does not make for entertaining radio in my opinion. What purpose did this prank and other radio pranks serve. None at all except upset and in this instance the ultimate upset. Sad sad time...

Just think its so sad for all really. A minor prank, gone very bad.

That hospital is going to be busy with Old Prince Phillip and his bladder infections this Christmas you can bet on it.

I dont think anyone will bother ringing them up to ask if his nurses have been taking the P.
