As we know the internet is full of good and bad advice so after spending weeks trawling through it all I thought it best to come straight to the experts 🙂
I have been unable to find someone locally so decided to replace the wet room vinyl floor myself. To set the scene we are currently doing up the house to sell but being a decent people we decided the change wet room (which is located downstairs and has a concrete floor) lino as it looked tatty and ripped at the corners.

One thing led to another and we ended up decorating the whole room, used self levelling compound followed by vinyl laminate style flooring, new suite etc. We left the area where the shower is (see above picture) and brought 4sqm of wet room lino, cove former etc.
The area where the shower is has the remains of what looks like a latex based compound which was peeling in most placed. I assume this was used to smooth out the imperfections in the concrete as it looks to me as if someone has just scraped away some of the concrete to obtain the drop towards the drain. What we have now after peeling of the majority of the compound (?) is lots of ridges (I tried to show one in the photos) which the new lino will never hide.

I was thinking of using quick set cement in places (like where the ridges are) to make the whole area smoother for the lino then a coat of sealer then slap on the lino adhesive and lay the lino using a roller. As you can guess my concern is lumps showing through the lino making the whole thing tatty and unprofessional therefore I would welcome any tips or help from the pro's 🙂

Lino? Lino? You come on a tiling forum asking about lino! 😉:tearsofjoy:

Can't find the lino forum 😀 .....happy to go with tiling if that's a better option but cost does come into it as I would need to get someone in to do it properly......if that's the best option then so be it.

It's more the preparation of the concrete floor I'm really interested in which I (assume) is similar to tiling?

No offence but fitting vinyl to a wet room floor is not a diy project. If it’s slip resistant vinyl you want then you’re gonna have to get a competent floor layer in and they’ll sort the prep also, otherwise you may as well throw your money out the window.

Agree 100% with your Lee but finding it difficult to find someone local, even went on to the find a tradesman sites with job details, nothing. Everything cost £75 so happy to give it a go and fail spectacularly :grinning: but if it turns out ok I can hire plastic weld gun locally for the 2 internal corners. As you say it's the prep that I have my concerns about.....

Don’t attempt a diy job ,seriously it’ll only fail, pay a flooring company to come in and fix the problem it’ll only take them 1 day to remedy.

£450 estimate......just out of interest what estimate could I expect if tiled? This might be a better option as move tilers in the area?

I've just had a small bathroom done on a job. It was prob only about 3m max, one internal corner to weld. £120 + vat supplied and fitted.

Not a true wetroom floor, but only 3 corners from being one.

Thanks Chris. I am no further forward, I told the guy to go ahead and do it but he hasn't got back to me so back where I started. You said you self-levelled the floor, my concrete floor is sloped to the drain but now uneven with ridges (was done 20 years ago) and obviously don't want pools every where. I did think about using SLF to even it out and make the concrete smooth (screwfix do a SLF that you can feather at the edge or in my case drain) but I would assume the SLF would flow towards the drain? Hopefully I can't find someone in the meantime to put the lino done and weld the 2 internal corners. Thank god we have a bath upstairs we can still use lol 🙂

If the floor isn't too rough and just has a few 'dings' in then you could always just fill with rapid set tile Addy perhaps? Its not too complicated to lay once your floor is smooth.

Mark the height of your wall trims all the way around.

Cut/mitre your coving.

Spray/brush impact adhesive and stick trim/cove on.

Measure your new flooring, cutting it so you have about 6" excess on every side, after wrapping up wall.

Spray adhesive on floor.

With a helper, center flooring and roll out from middle .making sure you don't get creases.

Then apart from trimming to fit under your wall trims, it just leaves the corners 😀

Chris......forgot to get back here but after exhausting all my avenues trying to get someone to do this I thought 'I will have a go'!
Scrapped off the crap off the floor the levelled it (fill in the indents really) & got some adhesive from screwfix. Cut the lino and 'double lapped' the 2 corners with 3 hidden strips of waterproof sealant each side. That was about 3 months ago and so far so good  No doubt when we sell the house someone will come in and change it (for tiles?) or make it into a utility room etc broom.jpg

I had no choice but to try myself. All in the lino, adhesive, SLF around about a ton. I do think tiles look much nicer........next time 😉
