How much do you charge an hour?
How much do you charge a day?
How long have you been tiling?
Can you get me discount on tiles?
What adhesive do you use?
What would you use to box in pipework?
How many square metres can you tile in a day?
How long will the job take? because I have to take time off work.
Can I see some of your work i.e. visit a clients house?
I want the grout depth to be the same as the tile depth.
Can you cut a tile in half?
Can you paint?
My previous tiler grouted the kitchen floor and all the dust settles in the grout line…..what can I do?
Can you tile around a plaster wall which has 3 bits of wood as an edge (instead of it being a plastered edge).
Can you give me a quote for regrouting the bathroom floor?
The tiles on the kitchen floor are at different levels (lipping). Can you lift them up and put them down again level?

These were all question asked by a customer. Unfortunately I was calling her back on her mobile so the 30 minute call was costing me money to give her advice. I knew deep down that I would be wasting my time popping around to give her a quote, but I went anyway. By the way, it was not a massive job she wanted quoting for, it was 6mtr of kitchen splashback.

She was talking about the job as if she lived in a palace. She wanted everything perfect.

Anyway, I went round to her place. What a dump. She had a new kitchen installed. The units were already coming away from the wall. She had 2 electric cables tied to two hot water pipes with cable-tie. The new plaster work on the walls was not level. The floor tiles were a joke (lipping, not aligned correctly and grouted to a very poor standard). She wanted me to tile part of a wall, but I told her that if It was tiled then she would not be able to open one of her cupboard doors! She then asked if I could cut tiles in half. It took me a moment to realize that she meant could I reduce the thickness of the tiles! She then asked me if I could paint. I told her I was a tiler not a painter, but suggested that her Husband paint the 12 inch square of wall. My Husband is useless she replied.

Before I left the house I said I would put the quote in the post. She said when she receives it she will then negotiate with me about the price – bloody cheek I thought

I spent an hour and a half round her house. She was asking me ‘How do I do this & how do I do that? I knew she was either going to tile the kitchen herself or get her useless Husband to do the work. I was not going to get the job. I was just glad to get out of the place.

So just in case you get a call from an Indian woman living in Harrow asking you the above questions, then you have been warned.

why didnt you charge her for the phone call and charge her £40 for the time spent in her house then do the work for nothing....lol....Thank god im not the only one who gets these crazy clients....people do try and get things cheap or for free but this is taking the P.

...so she would negoitiate about the price then, well you know what to expect before, during and after the job.

Let me know how it goes :yikes:

you can tell 'em a mile off, they get you round on the chance of a job, absolutely pump you for advice, info etc.I've found they don't often ask for a labour price, 'cos they've already decided they're gonna have a bash themselves!!

And how about this one:

"If you give me a really good price on this one, I have more work to give to you later and also I have some neighbors that are interested" 😛rrr:😛rrr:😛rrr:😛rrr:

I sometimes get the "We may give you the opportunity to quote for more work......." Well currently I am being asked to quote for this job, so we'll take one at a time shall we?

think yourself lucky you got out of there at all!!!

you could be still pinned against the wall being bombarded with questions lol

:smash:

You just can't tell. I have done similar jobs at similar prices for different clients and one will think your the best thing since sliced bread and the other will think you have done a shoddy job and overcharged.
