Exceeding substrate weight limits.

I remember dan put a comment on my thread before about a tile falling off the wall and killing a kid. Might be worth printing in off and showing the customer and hope they then realise the damage it can cause.

right, just looked in me book I got about weight limits, say's in there 30kg per m2 on to ply so could be just over the limit....but tiling on ply's dodgey anyway..

Yes I do understand about the ply issue have had it plenty of times, worked for a hotel/pub chain for 14 years everything was ply,I always made an issue in telling them to stop using it in the shower rooms but same thing they said I dont stop moaning now everything is opening up and they keep going back to repair cracked tiles but only used ceramic a lot of the time with them.

I believe plasterboard is 32kg unskimmed but you also got the weight of adhesive and grout probably another 4kg pm

I do believe he will not change his mind, can not understand that some people think that ply is just as good as backer board if you get a good deal theres not much in the price I had a good deal once the board was in 8 x4 sheets 12mm thick and the price at that time was £22 a sheet.

Do not tile onto ply. Walk away if builder will not change it. It will come back and bite you in the arse. Weight limits are not even a consideration. PLY IS A NO NO .

You can tell the builder what needs to be done until the cows come home, recently done a job for a so called know it all and in truth he knew diddly.

Ply is a frightning material and some is cheap imports where it delaminates.

Your choice at the end of the day but not one I would be doing.

Well the builder never got back to me yesterday as he said he would ,was just a waste of time driving 40 miles to look at the job and he did not have the respect to let me know, maybe its what I said to him that he didnt like ,well I hope it all goes bandy for him,as I'am sure it will with that much ply on the walls.

Just had a look at job, 600x600 porcs on skimmed plasterboard , curved bath panel made from 6mm ply and a floating chipboard floor I think I,ll give that one a miss.

Afternoon all,

Got some 600x300 Basaltina Black Porcelain going up to the ceiling in an entire ensuite, Tile Giants guys reckon tiles weigh in at about 22kg/m2. Walls all plasterboard and would think have been skimmed. Started ringing a few bells for me, but from what I've established it's very close to being ok, what's every bodies thoughts. I could quote to 12mm Hardie the whole room but don't want to give them this expense if they don't need it.

Cheers RR

Hummmmm on further reading 20kg/m2 on skimmed plasterboard so I reckon I need to re-board this or chose lighter tiles. Turns out the tiles are closer to 24kg/m2 too!
