Ok I have a tiling job to do next week and the guy phoned me up about an hour ago and told me his wife has changed one of the walls from 300x300 ceramic to 300x300 marble :mad2:

My quote was accepted and everything was fine, but this changes things, the wall is 2.65m x 2.25m and has two holes to be cut for shower pipes. What would you charge for this change, the walls have already been prepped and ready for tiling, so no change there.
I can see the change being -

  1. Back Buttered as there marble, eliminates any trowel marks
  2. Seal before grout and after grout
  3. Neutral cure silicon - stop staining
  4. Double time at least for wet wheel cutting
What time for this would you quote, and how much for doing just this wall?

CHeers guys

To be honest, i cant see anything, that i would charge any extra for. Maybe the sealer and a couple of hours extra labour, at most. The silicon should not stain the marble, if its been sealed twice, and given the proper time to dry. Well, my silicon as never stained any marble i'v put up...

My main concern would be whether the wall will be ok with the extra weight. I would also probably up my price a wee bit as marble is much less forgiving than ceramic, easier to damage, needs sealing etc.

Cheers guys, I just wanted to check, I'll add a couple of hours labour, due to the sealing. As far as the walls, they are stud walls with plasterboard skimmed. I intend to prime them, will they need to have any thing extra to cope with the marble. The other thing is I don't know the thickness of the marble, it could be quite thin.

just out of interest on this one guys whats the going rate for fixing marble? im not sure i totally agree on not putting the price up its a completely different product?? ive never actually fixed marble but i would be definately be changing the price with the customer, otherwise whats the point in having different price brackets for different products.:huh2:

I woouold be checking the weight gooing onto those walls and dont forget to include the adhesive and grout in the weight.

Dont exceed 18kg with your tiles, weigh them if you have to. Steam strip the skim plaster off the wall without damaging boards, this will give you about 30kg weight for your tiles.....Gaz

Cheers for the heads up guys, if there is more work to do then I will be charging more, I only asked about charging more as the quote had been accepted on ceramic tiles, then they want marble, there is more prep in marble, time is money!
