Tiles are getting bigger and harder and we all buy diamond blades to cut them with, and bigger and stronger manual cutters too!

And im sure 99% of us tilers have diamond drill bits in the van/car now these bits aren't cheap and even though you can buy some great drill bits that are value for money like 365 drills or you buy something like the marconist 850 set eventually you have to replace these bits!

So do you bite the bullet and cover the cost of these yourselves or do you charge for drilling these holes for pipes taps showers led lights etc? and if you do charge how much per hole? and do you show it on your estimate/quote? or hide it in the total price?

today i have been tiling a bathroom which has porcelain on the walls and floors

it has a wall hung pan and cistern push button so thats x3 holes here done and a diamond disc was used for cutting out the waste hole etc as it cant be seen!
hot and cold feed for sink x2 holes
waste for sink x1 hole
flow and return for heated towel rail x2 holes
cut out for shower mixer valve
and feed for water to go up shower hose x1 hole

in total 9 holes drilled using diamond core bits
2x cut outs useing diamond disc in angle grinder

thats money out of my pocket when i need to replace the bits

If I know on the price up of a job how many holes to cut then just blend in with the whole estimate, If they surprise me with extra holes then charge seperatly

I don't charge per hole, If I know i'm drilling a few then I add the cost in with some other part of the quote. I wouldn't want to see the customers face when I say i'm charging you x amount for drilling a hole, I try to explain most things to my customers but I think most would think i'm pulling their leg on this one as most would assume that it's like drilling any other hole

Who else here lays in the bath and has a good look round the room to spot any imperfections?

You know this is where the customer will spend most of their time while in the bathroom so I think this is the most critical view point

EDIT: I wasn't saying your WC waste could be seen from the bath Peckers, but it anoys me when people make a lash up behind the basin

The current bathroom I am doing there are 7 holes for the shower and body jets,
2 for the steam generator
2 for the wc
2 for the towel rad
2 led lights
15 in total, now I will be charging some to cover the cost of the bits but I will build it in to the price because ,as Colour Republic has said, trying to explain the hardness of porcelain etc to your client just isn't worth it

with you guys on this, you have to hide the cost because customers don't understand the effort/cost involved sometimes

I don't charge for drilling or the bits, they're consumables as far as I'm concerned:8:

The cost of tool wear and tear and consumables is built into the price, I would only start itemising every small detail of a job if the customer was being 'anal'...

Nope. Don't charge to fit door bars either, although i'm thinking of changing that, as the last couple were a pain in the ***! 😀
