could you please give me some advice. I'm about to start up on my own and have been researching prices of materials. My local tile shop sells granfix supergrip tubs 10L for 4.65 and 20kg spf rapid set for 7.82. Topps sells bal grip for 29.99 and spf rapid for 44.99. Whats the difference? Is the cheap stuff good enough? How do I compete with tilers who buy cheap stuff If I was buying the good stuff. Thanks in advance.

Use Mapei or Weber, just as good as BAL if not better and half the price or less!

Thanks, nearest tile giant is 13 miles away. Should topps be avoided then?
And is the big clinker any good or should I get a rubi or montolit?

i would suggest if you are just starting out let the customers get the materials to start off with, there are tilers local to me who can add £120+ on a job for materials(seen their quotes) when i know for a fact you are only talking £60/£70 for them. this way the customers know exactly what they are paying for. i heard a story of a previous tiler that had done another room in the same house as i was doing, the price he quoted for materials etc anyway he was running out of stuff and the customer volunteered to go and get some more. when they came back and checked his quote he was charging double for what they actually cost !!!! but thats why i suppose i was in there tiling this time.

Try and get an account at topps if it's the nearest supplier it'll be cheaper in the long run

the prices your local tile shop have quoted you are incredibly cheap what brand is the spf rapid ?

the 10 ltr granfix supergrip is about £16/£17 a tub where i live. you cant even buy a 5ltr tub of any adhesive for that price, some thing amiss i think.

trade prices work out better for regular traders, they also stock toppfix which i use quite often,in fact it's the only adhesive i would use apart from mapei/bal
as for the big clinker-it is an excellent cutter for the price and well worth buying for anybody starting out who doesn't have fortunes to spend on equiptment:thumbsup:

its a special trade offer that they have had going since february.

its a really good offer Ant the tile shop is selling it at a loss at those prices once you take into account the overheads

Is this the rapid set Dave?
I was in Topps at the weekend and was having a look at their adhesives, I was thinking of using it on a couple of jobs- whats it like? The lad said it was made by Palace.

It is made by palace and as with Dave I use it alot with no problems, it is rapid but there is a good time with it.

CHECK OUT HOW MUCH THE WHITE SPF IS....:yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes:

I DONT PAY THOSE PRICES EITHER.

it's quite good, just don't let it get too wet when knocking it up,you will be pleasantly surprised at the trade prices.very good value for money:thumbsup:

I usally use Ruby cutters but recently bought the big clinker to complete 25 sq mtr of floor laying 450mm porc tiles and I have to say considering the 109 pound price tag it was very good. I had lots of cuts to make for a 4 inch skirting board using the tiles and the big clinker faulterd only once through out the entire job and that was only a tiny chip off the corner.

Holy those topps prices are dear. How much discount does joe public get? Trade discount on those is amazing
