patio laying

was on site the other day, watching landscapers laying a patio, I know it's wrong but I asked "Is that the way flags should be laid?" They were using the old "5" spots of mortar method.I know that this is the wrong way to lay flags.Every tradesman on site would have walked past them but i was the only one to question their method, not in a "I know -it-all" manner, but I know if we laid floor tiles like that something would be said. What makes them so different? Incidentally their reply was "we've always done it like this"!

just had a quick look at them but they looked like Marshall Argent

I've been working sites and private work and never seen the dot and dab method used for patio's

dot and dab method is recommended for certain types of stone such as indian sand stone ,i had some laid in my garden last year and gave the builder the installation book should have done it myself but i was going away he didnt follow the suppliers guide book and laid them on a dry loose bed i have had to take most of it up (over 35sqm )the guide book stated to lay them on a wet mix dot and dabbed, i know this is not the standard method for all stone but it is for indian sand stone

Doug,i done my patio at the caravan.35ft by 14 ft,using york stone,screeded the area with a semi dry concrete mix to a depth of 8",then laid the flags into a cement slurry,its been down 2 years now and had no probs with it,i even park my van on when its full of gear

What happened?

The slabs rocked when walked on ,they were pointed with a dry mix brushed into the joints , moss has started growing in the joints of the stones i haven't relaid yet, I am going to finsh relaying them over the xmas break .

Ain't it a bit cold for that, shouldn't you be tucking into turkey and xmas pud, won't you be too p?????? to lay in a straight line.
