I disagree that's the best way to tank a shower enclosure is to fit the tray and tank down to it. Surely the best way is to fully tank the wall to the floor, then fit the tray, silicone it well with a profile tool, then tile.

When tiling to a tray I prefer it fitted with Classi seal, silicone that to the wall, overlap it with tanking tape then also the verticals and paste the lot.

Imo the perfect way would be fully tank the wall to floor, obviously tape the corner, fit the tray and silicone, then apply butyl tape over lapping on to tray which will stick like you know what to the tray

Ok, see your point. So you are still taping down to the shower but painting the membrane beneath as well. Suppose it seems silly not to for the amount of membrane it will use, if for any reason the the tape/silicone fails. Point taken onboard :)

I like trays fitted using classi seal too (unless the plumber stretches the corner). Then silicone that to the wall and tanking tape over all internals, joins and the classi seal/tray. Then paste everywhere in the shower to the ceiling.

I usually only tank to chest height unless I'm feeling generous
