Can't understand why you would dot metro tiles. ( or any other) it would be near impossible to keep them flat.

The tiles are coming off because the walls have not been primed, then the dispersion adhesive had all the moisture pulled out of it by the wall.

Soak the tiles in water, this should soften the adhesive down then it will be easier to scrape off, they should come up like new, Make sure the next guy that puts them on primes the wall with an acrylic primer or SBR diluted 2 to 1 and trowels the wall with adhesive, not dot and dab the tiles them like the last guy, cement adhesive will always be better that tub ready mix,. How much was the tiler going to charge for the job, he wasn't a property maintenance tiler buy any chance.

Probably a time served long standing tta member...

It seems only a few have been dotted & dabbed which seems a bit random, I wonder if they fell off & he perhaps did that as a bodge it fix...
I've checked other tiles now & they seemed to have fixed much better in other areas. When my plumber took down all the original tiling, it pulled down some of the wall surface, leaving the old lath & plaster frame exposed. The tiler then used a gyproc drywall bonding adhesive to fill that in & he tiles straight onto that. That seems to be where the problem is worst

Thanks for the tips, I will definitely do that. I bought him a BAL SBR primer but that's sitting unopened next to the grout bags. He was charging £*** & said 2.5 days. It's about 14 sq m of walls & 2.5 sq m of floor. He's a carpenter by trade but swore he knew what he was doing when I asked if this is something he's competent with

Not to worry tho, but had to be removed.

Maybe someone local to you may read this thread later today and may be able to help u out if required.
If I wasn't so completely snowed under, I'd pitch in cos I'm just over an hour away.
But I just can't I'm afraid.
I even brought my work home yesterday to cut today for fitting tomorrow haha
Just too up against it I'm afraid.

Well I really appreciate you saying that anyway, so thank you. I imagine that anyone who is any good will always be very busy. That's partly why I'm so worried now, I don't know where to turn to get this fixed as quickly as is practical... (I don't think @antonio plane will fly here fast enough & the M25's a shocker )
Joking aside I wouldn't expect help for nothing, I'd obviously pay my way. I wish I could learn what to do fast enough to do a good job of it myself

can I ask a final question please? I've been having a look at some other threads & wonder if the shower/bath area should have been 'tanked' but I don't know exactly what this means (other than it relates to waterproofing)? Is this something that should always be done? Will tiles applied straight to a wall in a shower be no good unless this is all done? Should some kind of plasterboard or membrane have been installed first?

You did also state that the wall was a lath and plaster which had areas missing, then filled with a bonding adhesive to fill.

Yes I did, so I'm wondering if this means I need to pay more for tbe tanking thing I've never heard of? Money is not an issue ( although I am on a budget ). Unless I win the lottery sometime soon, I don't wish to leave my home at all so naturally I'm willing to pay for the best I can afford. I'm unlucky in that what:who I thought was the best turned out to be anything but the best. I don't know a way around that!?
Does anyone else. When all you have to go on is trust; who do you trust?

I trust guys I know (a very few who I went to school with) or have met on here, I know a builder who I wouldn't touch with a barge pole but he is always working and destroying someone's house...I've seen the results🙁

I feel for you Nicky a simple job for any reasonable tiler . a few years ago I may of been able to help you out as I used to work for a company from T W . who recommended this clown to you if it was the plumber then you may be able to get him to rectify things as he has a responsibility.
I personally would rip them all off then get a plasterer to re skim your walls then find a tiler advertise on here if need b,e then get your plumber back .
or look for a company like mine who do every thing plumbing tiling plastering etc but unfortunately getting some one at short notice may be difficult we are nowfully booked till mid September .
good luck I feel for you

Personally the walls are lath and plaster, I would have had them off before anything else....

Thanks for your reply. Sadly for me, I've learned my lesson the hardest way. I find it incredible that a certain few people out there have got no consciences, whatsoever. My own conscience wold never let me blag I could do something I couldn't.
Gentlemen, it's been a very eventful day!
I took all the tiles off on the two external walls (they all popped off very easily, mostly by hand or a blade under tile corner). I found the bonding he used was still pretty damp so the adhesive in those areas was soft as putty. I also found that the surface of the lathe & plaster wall itself seemed unusually damp (never noticed a problem with it prior to the tiling).
So, have now ripped the whole lot out back to the bare bones & I'm feeling pretty scared! Surely nothing else can go wrong...
I'll post up some before & afters!
