Tiling on lino?

Hi there,

I'm just about to head out to price a job up for a new contact for a 9m kitchen floor. He told me that there is currently a lino floor there and that I'm to latex over the top before tiling. Firstly, can you tile onto lino and secondly can you latex onto it? My first impressions are that it won't bond? Any help would be really appreciated.

I would pull up the lino. I've never understood why anybody would never want to. Tileto the original substrate, it's always better than tiling onto anything that's on top of it.

It is a no no IMO.. it needs ripping up first.

DO NOT TILE ONTO CUSHIONED FLOORING OR LINOLEUM - is in bold type and capitals in the tile adhesive bible that I use.

surely it will be more cost effective to rip it up rather then use an s.lc over the floor

Sorry Terry but for Health and Saftey reasons Asbestos is not to be laughed at!
Any job will be closed down until the site is cleared by specialist companies now!

Let the customer tile it if he knows what is best. Rip it up, latex over the residual glue so you dont stick to it!

Any adhesive manufacturer would advise against doing this. If they do, don't do it.....simple. I think you'll probably find lino comes up reasonably easily with the right tools.

Hi guys,

I'd just like to thank everyone for their advice and for confirming my suspicions. I spoke to the builder and explained the situation. I also gave him the number for Ardex do he could double check with them, and on doing so agreed to take the lino up himself. Everyone's a winner! :hurray:
