Hi all.

How do you guys set out a diamond set floor with a square set border around the perimeter?
Would you lay the perimeter first and then cut the diamond inside or do the diamond set first and then work out the perimeter after?

Cheers

Very good question CCTiling, I'm sure someone will be able to shed some light on this... I cant wait as I would like to know as well..

personally i would lay the perimeter first, try and set it to as near as whole tiles as you can before layning the middle section and the diamond

This one had to be centralised to the room.

I dry laid the centre first to get best cuts. Then I laid outer area and border. Then laid center

Still cocked up slightly and had small cuts on the corners :yikes::smilewinkgrin:

I would mark out the perimeter first. Then do a quick layout for the pattern to ensure you dont end up with tiny triangles where the center and perimeter join up.
This is also why I keep at least 2 chalk line colors. If you make a mistake, then you use the other colors for your finnal layout.
The key is to spend the extra time for the layout. That way the finnal result is near perfect and the cutomer thinks you are a genious.

Nice CJ, thats what I was talking about.
Small cuts in the corners is better than all the way along perimeter.
Many of my customers also seem impresed with those little detail cuts.

do it with lines and Pythagoras and a tape and then decide

I always set the centre design first and fit a border/perimeter to it!
You have to have a full/half tile up against the border and it should be symetrical around all edges.
However if the centre feature is only a panel as per other examples then I would allow the border to be the main feature and cut the tiles at the diamond to fit!

 Nice one John................I think I would get spaced out on that design mind:smilewinkgrin:

Im really lazy nowadays,
Used to set it out border first on the job but now use a program called Precision Tile Pro , can do full setouts on the lounge hehe,

Thank you for all your replies. I would've wanted to lay the diamond set pattern first but was concerned I may have to cut the border tile down in size to meet the corner of the diamond. I'm gonna have a look at the precision tile program which was mentioned, could be useful!

I done one this week,i laid the diamond set first, well measured out then put in the square border! nice full and half tiles in centre, customers were delighted:thumbsup:

I lay the centre first so that you can end the diagonals on full and half tiles........ looks much neater than having uneven cuts.

Hi Mistral.

By doing it that way I can't see how you can get whole tiles around the diamond set for the square on border. I think it's more important to get whole tiles for the border but make sure you don't get any silly little triangles around the edge of the diamond set. I've been having a play around on the precision tile prog which was recommended by another tiler on this post and it works very well setting out this type of layout. I did try to get whole/half tile in the diamond to start with but then I couldn't get whole border tiles around the outside. O what fun!!

You do usually need a cut on the outside. You need to put a full tile on each of the 4 corners and then centre between those tiles as you would for anything else. Not perfect, but you hardly notice the cuts as they are only around the outside - more than made up for by all of the cuts being equal in the main field. This is assuming that it is only a single tile around the edge. A large area outside the centre field and you can't really do it this way.

i think the border tile is more important than than getting half and full tiles, a lot of border tiles carry a pattern to them so to cut them would cut the pattern and look a bit wrong if you know what i mean.

I would agree with your comments. I wouldn't like to cut down in size the border tiles. Just personel opinion :smiley2:

I was talking about when the edge tiles are the same as the diagonal tiles...... not patterned.

Job completed last weekend so thought I would post some pics
