Love to know what techniques people have come up with for leaving a clean tidy WIDE Silicon joint. Sealant manufacturers tips are useless.Have taken a look on Search Engines but without success. Have seen the perfect job but so far unable to find the artist !

Try using a kit like this..........dave..

Silicon Set

http://www.tradetiler.com/acatalog/Silicon-set.jpg
Silicon smoothing rubber tools for all joint shapes

For creating perfect joints fast. Made from a soft rubber like material

An exceptional and unique set of tools of professional results

Set consists of:-

4 mm radius and 45 degree angle tool

7 mm radius and 45 degree angle tool

10 mm radius and 45 degree angle tool

storage case included

First apply your Silicon in the normal way. Spray the whole area with a strong soapy solution (i.e. washing up liquid and water, (spray bottle available below) then use these tools to even up and form a perfect joint in seconds! Keeps Silicon off your hands

Now thats an interesting tool kit....could help me lose weight!

Have you any idea just how many Magnum icecreams I have to eat through the summer to ensure a good supply of wooden spatulas to last through the winter.

i put a tesco carrier bag on my hand - run my finger along the siliconed gap (after spraying with soapy water) and then collect the mound of Silicon in the bag and then throw it at ememies lol.

I use on of those Silicon sets, they are brilliant, wouldnt use anything else, using your finger looks crap.

That depends how you use your finger surely.
Some Silicon tools are shaped like a finger because its a good shape for most jobs.
----
wickes have a Silicon spreading tool - its shaped like a steam rollered thumb.

if you cut the tiles correctly you wont need a wide Silicon joint
practice is perfect keep plugging away

thing is I do want a wide joint in certain circumstances, such as bath edge. Silicon can only stretch 25% therefore the wider the joint the more flexibility. I have seen to many Silicon joints parting company with bath and shower tray edge, usually on wooden floors

fill the bath with water before you Silicon, and Silicon bath/shower tray to wall before you tile

have tried the full bath technique.....my feet got wet
Siliconed tray into place ......... absolutely.

Silicon will not stick to wet surfaces....apply Silicon....spray all around and remove with wet finger....it will only stick in the dry joint you applied it to......Gaz

Buy the tool set.Ive just finished a bathroom and they are brilliant as they remove any excess clean from the tiles and keep your hands clean...make sure you keep dipping it in soapy solution and keep a paper towel roll handy to wipe the excess onto.

only ever use my finger and never had a mess or complaint yet
keep your finger wet with some soapy water :8:

Using Silicon sealant

1. To begin with, slot your cartridge or tube of Silicon into the gun. Adust the trigger tightness so that it is attuned to the size of the tube, then squeeze it lightly and slowly until the mechanism is touching the tube, before securing it into position. Now, you are ready to go.

2. Prepare the contact area by removing any dirt, grime, or debris that may interact with and weaken the sealant. To clean it, use a wet sponge, which has been doused in soapy water. Dry the surface thoroughly with a towel, as a damp surface can affect the efficiency of the sealant due to its waterproof properties.

3. At a 45 degree angle, pierce a hole at the top of the Silicon sealant tube with scissors or a utility knife as close to the tip as possible. Use a piece of scrap material to test out whether you need to make the hole bigger. Once you are happy with the result, slowly and evenly begin to apply the Silicon to the intended surface.

4. To get the perfect finish on your sealant application, you need to find the right speed to work out. If you apply it too slowly, you may find you are left with a rough finish and use more of the product than necessary. Move too fast, and you risk not filling the gaps correctly.

5. When you reach the end of the seam, let go of the handle and press the lever at the back of the sealant gun. This releases the pressure and stops the sealant flow straight away. If you fail to do this, the sealant will keep flowing out of the nozzle.

6. Wet your finger and use it to level out the sealant every time you apply it. It is essential that you use a damp finger to do this; otherwise, the Silicon sealant will stick.
