The plasterer won't really be fussed whatever he uses, as long as its easy and quick. Double-check that the Tiler is happy with whatever is agreed with, & it might help if the plasterer has a straight-edge of some sort .

One coat plaster is the only backing plaster you can tile on. But I don't know what weight it can hold. A plasterer should know. Yours doesn't seem to have the knowledge from what you are saying.
