Tiling shower enclosure

Hello, i am going to tile my new double shower, 2 of the walls are plasterboard and have been skimmed, what is the best way to go about this?

waterproof before tiling? and what products do you recommend ?

The walls would have been better bare, more weight per m2, now your down to about 20 kilo per m2, do not use pva, you'll probably need an sbr primer, what tiles are you using, and what adhesive were you planning on using.

EDIT: must type faster, those tiles will be very close to the limit, if not overweight for the skimmed walls.

Yep, those tiles are way to heavy for the substrate, even without the plaster, see this link for weights, you'll have to rethink substrates and or tiles... sorry.

And that adhesive is no good, you need a powdered adhesive, I think you need a total rethink.

Hi lee the trade do not use screw fix for adhesive, thats their sales gimmick. Go to Tile giant if you have one nearby, if not find a decent shop that sells white flexible adhesive for your travertine, its in a bag not a tub.
You need a sealer for the tiles, are you going to tank the walls because with your choice of tile you really should.

There is a tile giant round the corner to me, am i looking for a particular brand or product ? how much is it ? ive got to do a small amount of floor tiling too, will this adhesive be ok.

should i buy smaller tiles ? lighter tiles ? what will happen to the tiles if they are to heavy, just fall off ?

The walls have to be able to take the tile weight or they will be in danger of falling off. Why not remove the plasterboard now and replace with aqua panels, then you can have the tiles of your choice. A little more prep now will pay dividends in the future with regards to leaks/stability etc.

I reckon 12mm travertine with adhesive and grout is about 30kgs/sq mtr, 50% over the recommended limit for plaster. As has been advised, remove the plaster and re-board with Aquapanel. Alternatively, choose a 'travertine lookalike' ceramic tile. Adhesive for me would be Mapei Adesilex P9 in white and Mapei Ultracolor Plus grout in Jasmine with matching Silicon.

just had a thought, my tray is 1100 x 700, could i board onto the the plasterboard ? and screw it into the timber frame and joists ?

its been plasterboarded and skimmed and the tiles i want are too heavy, so looking at aquaboard so i can use the tiles.......

Just had a read, could'nt find what tiles you are intending to fix Tiles and Adhesive Weight Per Square Metre - THE TILE SOURCE

Could you not fix another sheet of plasterboard over the existing board if the tiles and adhesive are under 32kg

If there 10mm thick you should be ok for plasterboard, any thicker then aqua board as suggested

Not skimmed not with them tiles, it dos'nt matter the size of the tile it's the thickness and what it's made of that determine the weight issue.

Check to see if the tiles are 10mm then a sheet of bare plasterboard will suffice, if the tiles are over that thickness then you will have to go the aqua board route.
