Discuss Shared waste stack inspection point with 4 layers of plasterboard - how to reboard & tile? in the Canada Tile Advice area at TilersForums.com.

I am a part-time handyman - have done floor tiling before and small areas of wall tiling but never a whole bathroom. Have recently had 2 repeat customers come to me and ask me to do bathrooms for them. This first one is a straight bathroom swap-out on a top (4th) floor flat. The old bathroom has come out easy - I'm going to re-board the whole room: aquaboard around the bath and sink with MR board everywhere else. It's being tiled floor to ceiling.

My question is this. In the second and third pictures, you can see an inspection hole, for what appears to be near the top of the waste stack for the whole block. When tiled previously, this was covered by a removable piece of painted wood, surrounded by tiles. It looked horrible. The only thing that hid it was how horrible the rest of the bathroom looked.

1. How should this be done? Is there an "inspection tile" that can be used?
2. There are 4 layers of plasterboard. I'm guessing this is not down to lazy re-boarding but more likely buildings regs. I want to strip off the outer layer to re-board with aqua board - obvs am worried that stripping off 1 layer of pb will be difficult. Any advice pls?

Many thanks,

Jonathan

Yep - I found this on Amazon which I think will sort it:

Still worried about removing 1 layer of plasterboard - no idea why there are so many layers. The only time I've known multiple layers of pb applied was for buildings regs when a chap put standard pb around an RSJ and it needs to be fire rated..

Does anyone else have any experience / suggestion on the multiple layers of pb issue? Worst case I could strip them all out but I'm worried that would breach buildings regs somehow..
