Hey guys, obviously lots of good niche experience out there....here's a challenging one for you....can anyone tell me how to glaze a niche? I have had wooden shower niches built and want to use tiles in the shower areas, but frosted glass to line the niches themselves. Has anyone done this? How did you do it? Thanks! Kate

Hello Kate. I'd say your best bet is to have a glazing company cut the glass to size for each part of the niche, then fit.

Thanks Brian....I had the same in mind....do you think I should have the glass cut a bit bigger than the niche so I can tile up to it, or exact size and use some kind of edging? Views?

Tile the wall outside the niche first, then have the glass cut to fit the inside. As for trim, it's personal preference really, I like chrome or brushed steel personally. What is the main tile going to be? Stone/ceramic/porcelain etc?

I think that sounds sensible - the main tile is a small white honeycomb, which doesn't edge very neatly, so a trim would help.

I'm having a boat renovated, and the project manager is humming and haaing about whether we can use glass in the niche, which is the finish I'm looking for, and he wanted more detail about how to do it. We'll use a glazier and a tiler who hopefully will know what they're doing....if I can get the project manager to agree it's possible in the first place. Your info has been very useful in making the case, thanks!

Kate, just thinking, considering it's a boat and most likely subject to considerable temperature and air moisture changes, as well as movement, how about using clear acrilyc 'glazing' sheets instead? You would would have less condensation than with glass and more flexibility, and they can be cut to exact sizes.
