I have tryed BALL ebony grout but customer was not happy as it drys a dark charcoal colour, he is looking for a grout that is black not dark grey, had considered using cement dye but am a bit concerned that it will effect the stability of the grout and still may not give desired results.

Id prefer just to use a different grout if you folks know of one that is actually black not dark grey.

If you want a really proper, almost shiny black, like tar, epoxy grout is the only one.

I agree with Mosaic girl.
If the grout is to match a shiny black tile in particular, it's never going to be jet black.
The tile itself will always make a cement based grout look duller- so greyish.

Epoxy would be the only way of getting pure black.
