Can anybody help restore original tiles I discovered when I uplifted a carpet in my downstairs hall? A number of local tilers have visited & shook their heads. There's not much damage, thankfully - about 5 tiles need replacing & there are some chips where previous occupants nailed down their carpet. The main problem is how to clean them, they've got old glue, old cement, paint spots etc etc. Hall is 4ft wide, 16ft long. Would be a shame to cover them up again, but I need some help to clean & patch them up. Can anybody help?

Yes, I'll post a couple of pics as soon as I can borrow a camera (wife on holiday has appropriated ours)
