Hello there. Im currently thinking about upgrading my bathroom. I want to fit a pre formed shower tray into the bathroom which will be tiled over and that will be screened on two sides and up against the walls on the other. My queery is that having looked at some post that have previously been put here i have noticed that other people have tanked out their entire bathrooms even though they have screened off the shower the same as i would like to do. Can somebody please tell me if it is necessary to tank the room or is just tiling the wall and floor with water proof adhesive and grout sufficient enough? Also is it necessary to use aqua panels instead of ordinary plaster board as part of the bathroom will be re boarded out to start with.

Many Thanks
Tony

Hi and welcome

You dont need to tank the whole room just the wet area. In fact you dont HAVE to do that but it is highly advisable. Normal plasteboard will be ok as long as its fixed properly and tanked. Cement backer boards are better as they dont break down when wet thats the only difference. This is all done as the grout is only water resistnant not actually waterproof.

hi Tony

When I re-tiled my bathroom, I chose to tank the shower end of the bath (2 sides, from bath to ceiling) to ensure there was a good waterproof barrier as the shower head was situated on an internal stud wall and the other side is the guest bedroom.

I also re-tiled the shower cubicle in my en-suite, and again I tanked this on all 3 sides as the cubicle was formed against internal stud walls.

I used regular plasterboards and then purchased some Mapei tanking products to do the waterproofing.

And I highly recommend that you tank, as my thread here shows what happens when you haven't got a tanking/waterproofing barrier

Hi and Welcome, as has been said already, defo tank but only in the areas that will get wet from the shower and 12.5 mm plasterboard will be ok for this.

if you tank the wet areas water should not penetrate so plasterboard is fine in a shower if tanked properly. cement boards are a better surface to tile onto and have better properties for heavier tiles though (weight of tiles)

Thanks to all of you for the advice, i will certainly heed it. Great site by the way and all of you are so supportive and never knock anyone for not knowing something, we all have to learn from somewhere dont we.
Thanks again, Tony.

Hi Gowolf and welcome. As you are re boarding I would advise to use cement backer boards in the shower/wet area
