IvegotsTILE

Just got a job tiling 15 kitchen splashbacks in a new block of flats,he wanted a price for each splashback. There is about 5sqm in each a window,15 sockets with the faces already on and a round extraction fan to cut round.the tiles are 450 by 330:whatchutalkingabout .The foreman said one tile will fit from worktop to the bottom of the perfectly units because they are 450 from the worktop.
I said I was quite busy and if he wanted me to start that week I could only work a few hours here and there so I'd prefer to be paid by the hour.He was a bit unsure but agreed,I said I'd want £18 an hour and he said fine.

I'm glad I did this as alot of the units are about 5mm low so have to cut tiles with a wet cutter which is time consuming and its awkward cutting round all the sockets.
So I'm now doing 10 hour days having all my scheduled breaks and the job is 5 mins from where I live so no time wasted travelling and no petrol costs.GET IN:thumbsup:

The tiles look awesome by the way, thought they might look strange being so big but they actually look very trendy.

Do any of you ever do work on an hourly rate?

Ivegots sometimes we all have to i never liked it because could earn more on a price but sounds like it wouldn't have been much good like that 😛ete

I was kicking myself on the first one a bit cause I finished it quite quickly and thought I could tile at least 2 in a day so would of been better on a price but all the other ones since have the units fitted wrong, power being turned off by the sparkies, sockets out of line and some worktops not level which has really slowed me down so I'm really glad I picked an hourly rate.

thats the trouble with builders lucky for me i can usually charge for those sort of problems just got to be careful i don't muck up or others will counter charge me

how do you cut the tile for sockets , have the sockets had to be removed when they fall in middle of tile never done any big tiles in kitchen yet...

just carefully mark the position of the hole, allowing 5mm lip, take the guard off the wet cutter and plunge cut the tile. Theres usually enough play in the wires to enable you to manouver the socket through the hole, just be careful not to pull any wires out. better if the power is off

the socket is shorter than diagonal hole ie corner to corner as big tells you plunge cut it 😛ete

Get a 4inch angle grinder to do these much easier, do nearly all my cutting with one these days.
