Hall way with a step

I'm doing a hall way with a step to a second level before it enters the clients main hall way in a house. I've never done a step before, so how do I get the chalk line to continue onto the step/second level? Thanks, Fred.

just strike a chalkline Fred,making sure the bottom and top of stairs meet.Also you could use a laser.

Laser lines are great on these kind of jobs

If not.........the old fashioned tape,pencil and a big level

id agree with the other posts i think laser level is ur best bet
