the thing is dave , this is basic stuff. its tough out there at the moment , and when time served tilers here this sort or thing it does put your back up. no need to be rude agreed,
advice is one thing , nursing people is something else.
there was still no need for simon's remarks, Tartan was here to ask advice, and if people don't log on for that reason then why are we here?

if you read between the lines on this dp theres a bit more to this

simhopper and tartan are in direct competition off the same local jobsite

tartan won the job and then asked for advice on here

I can see simhoppers point of view and understand why hes upset

simhopper is entitled to his view on this

but it was the way that he expressed his view that was the problem

those of us that know what we are at want to raise the bar on tiling in the uk so that only proffessionals are asked to tile

once customers see it done right they wont accept second best and will only employ the best

that means taking new tilers under our wing and nurturing them, we want them to ask for advice and if they get bitten for it they wont ask. their customers will suffer along with the reputation of the tiling trade

im sorry simon left but it was his choice to be removed

just to add to this thread, ive had tony aka tartan tiler with me today and understand his point of view, he is a new tiler and used bals powerspec thing, it said white star and he only asked if this was correct, to get smacked for it is nonsense, we all had to start somewhere

to say he is in direct competition with simhopper is rubbish, yes they advertise via gumtree but tony has only had one quote and the punter only had one quote which was him and no one else was involved, why is simhopper upset then

today we boarded out 27m2 ply, set the tiles out so they ran true to 3 offset doorways, then laid just under 11m2

from his work i can see he is dedicated and i have no probs with his work or work ethics, i got help when i started and if more people did this then we would all be better tilers and ourmcustomers will be better served

to be true tony did actually do bout 80 per cent of the work, i just pointed out what id do or showed how id do this and that etc, then just let him get on with it

i bought the butties tho lol

cheers

well if simon and tony are both on gumtree and didnt go for the same work then simons out of order in complaining that they are on the same site, gumtree is just a local site for selling goods and sevices

ive used bal powerspec and its a bit short on info so I dont bother now

the main thing here is that tony got the support of the forum

exactly mike, if u look at simons site hes actually aplumber who offers a handman service and all trades so he isnt actually a time served tiler either, makes him just like any other newbie imho

sounds to me like sour grapes at tony finding work when hes struggling

I have noted in this rescession that people are looking for two types of contractor

those that handle the whole job from design to finish and the specialist

theres no room in the market for tradesman/ handyman

if they want a plumber they get a plumber

if they want a handyman they get a handyman

and so on

im specialising now and dont regret it

im pleased things worked out between you and tony

TARTAN TILER

Hi All

Just a quick msg to put everything straight. I have never met, been on the same site or domestic property as this guy Simon. There is no chance I could ever have undercut him on any job, it looks like this guy was looking for an opportunity to slag me off as we are in the same geographical area for work.

Thanks for all the advice and supportive comment and I would also like to thank Andy for inviting me along the past couple of days.

I hope Simon the Handyman has a busy year ahead.

Just bumping some of the older popular (sometimes not so popular) threads. Probably wont be current discussion these days but I just need to do it. So just ignore the thread if it's not current for you.
