hi guys, need some advice on expansion joints as i dont normally need to do them but have a job coming up where i do. floor is 30 sqm - half of exsisting substrate concrete other half floor board ( not t & g).this was what i was gonna do - secure floorboards down then 10mm backerboards of the whole area using ardex 7001 screwing down also on the wooden part, then ufh, then arditex na, then spf to fix the tiles followed by flexi grout.do i 'bridge' the 2 different substrates with any of these materials and if not how do i get the expansion joint that im gonna put in, level with top of tile? i hope that makes sense but i bet it dont !! tiles will be approx 300mmx300mmx10mm and ceramic. thanks guys.

Hi mate,

I would deffo have one over the join of where the two different substrates meet. From this point you may put them every 8 - 10 metres.

If you contact a manufacturer they will reccomend the best product for the job and also tell you how many you will need for that area. I would imagine you would need three in the feild aswell as one around the entire perimeter.

This is my opinion but still, I would get reccomendation from manufacturer e.g. schluter. gradus or genesis etc.

Please let us know how you get on mate.

I agree with TFS, definately need one at the bridge between the two substrates. Schluter Dilex would be good for this application.

If its not T & G I take it that its chipboard? You need to add strength with extra noggins, can you not replace this floor with ply first as its a much better substrate for tiles.

I had this problem a couple of years ago and opted to bridge the substrate transition with PCI Pecilastic before tiling. Has worked a treat no cracking at all. And it was travertine which is quite prone to the odd crack:thumbsup:

I would still replace the floorboards with ply like Dom says though.....
