Hey people

Been a long time since i was last on here!

I've had a customer come back to me with some cracked tiles in his bathroom. Its 12mm no more ply, I've called them and apparently it has to be glued on the joins AND to the stud work, who knew?

Anyone else had any issues with this? I've fitted all the other types of tiling board i can think of, wedi, marmox, aquapanel, hardi etc but i've never heard of having to glue them to the stud work as well, so I didnt glue this one either. :/

I'm getting flak of this guy now as I dont have an answer for him to recitify it without taking out and starting again. If i cut out the 10 cracked ones and cut the join in the boards and glue it with the NMP glue, whats to say it wont crack again?

Any thoughts please?

It does say so on the fact sheet, but Ive never used NMP on walls , so never had to do it .
Not sure how to rectify it without taking it all off

Take out the cracked tiles, glue the joint (might help reduce movement) then get a length of tape (wedi/kerdi keba) and use that as an uncoupling layer.

If it goes again - full rip out!

Always safer to tape the joints, especially if you're fixing soft ceramics.

possibly find there is a bit of reflection in the wall and if someone leans against it it move and this leads to the crack/failure.
was the board joints staggered?

The joints are taped and skimmed with addy prior to fixing. It was only 2 boards so it cant be staggered.

I know what the problem is, it's expansion of those boards, why would they want them glued if they weren't subjectto thermal movement!? I think mostly I'm narked that the instruction to glue them isn't on the label on the board.

I have no experience of working with NMP........but did you fit any horizontal noggins between your studwork timbers, ie were all of the edges of the board securely fixed.....just a thought.

The few times I've used NMP I've always screwed and glued the boards and put a runof glue on edges of boards before butting them.

Serious question, why would you use nmp or hb on walls? All the cracks I've come across have been down to ply walls or cement board. Never wedi or kerdi board.
