Cement board and Ditra

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Excuse me of this has been done to death but my normal prep for chip board or floor boards (besides fixing the boards themselves) is to glue and screw 6mm cement board then over the top with Ditra mat. Is this too belt-and-braces to do in every situation or is this the norm? Cheers.

Ok thanks. One more question then, what would then be the best method where half of the floor is floorboards and the other half screed? I was considering the idea of cement boarding the suspended area and having the screed made level with that, then ditra over the lot. Am I right in thinking Ditra directly to boards isn’t the best way to go?

if your going to over lay with ditra you may of well used ply rather than cement board.
recently ive done a few jobs using a ply called sp101 its a specialist flooring ply ive used tons when laying karndean and now feel confident in using it for ceramics .
ive treated it first with a 3/1 SBR MIX and then tiled using tilemasters ultimate.
the first time i used it was on my sons bathroom 18 mths ago and as hes had no problems feel confident to use on floors were over boarding is required.

SP101 and FG1 are the only two recommended types of ply wood that can be used within the LVT market. The spec relates to the veneer and the glue used in manufacturing.

Not sure on the thickness of the FG1 but I believe that SP101 only comes in 6 and 9mm. Excellent quality wood. Never used it for tiling though, only LVT.

sp 101 is more expensive than hardy backer board and 3xs the cost of propper ply what ever that is

If the boards are strong and no movement ,ditra onto chipboard flooring
Hi, this is what I've been advised (new conversion with green chipboard glued and screwed - no movement) but my concern is replacing the floor in 5 years time and pulling up the ditra in the future will destroy the chipboard. Am I being too negative or would laying a 6mm backer be best? Only a 3m2 ensuite with porcelain tiles.

Thanks
