Advice on different thickness tiles for my bathroom

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

I'm retiling a second floor circa 1970 bath, plywood sub floor. I bought hardie 1/2"waterproof backer board. The old tile was set in cememt, about 1.25" total thickness, so my aim was to get close to that so the toilet wouldn't be a problem.

Here's my issue. I have porcelain 8x48" planks bordering a mosaic tile. The thickness difference is about 1/8". There will be more thinset on the planks, so the difference could become 1/4". What's the best way to get the 2 tiles level?

The options I could think of, but could be all wrong.
  1. put 1/4" backerboard on top of the 1/2" where the mosaic is to be set.
  2. use one of those membranes that are 1/8" thick on the cement backerboard
  3. less thinset on the planks, but that seems to be a bad idea.
Thanks in advance!

No one had any advise for me so I must be in complete unknown territory or maybe you figure I might mess this up. Oh well. I'll try again. I've been watching tons of youtube video to figure out the best way to do this. I found a guy named Sal Deblasi who inset thin glass tile in a waterfall design, inside thicker tile. He basically set the tile to backerboard rectangles that he then installed between the thicker tiles. I'm thinking I could do something similar by building up the floor, since my small tile is the larger proportion of tile.

I could install uncoupling membrane, cut to sit where the planks will be. With a layer of 1/4" plywood fixed to where the mosaic tiles will be, then uncoupling membrane on top of that. Or I could do something similar using backerboard.

Cut 1/2" Hardie backerboard where the thicker tile goes and 1/4" backerboard where the mosaic goes, connecting them with mesh tape and joint compound.

Any thoughts on this?
